  • WTF did they expect to happen? its a private company after all, and for some years they have been trying to move away from controversial content as the place becomes more commercially successful and they can afford to lose non-productive (i.e non consumerist) users.

only a few years ago, activist groups scraped together the cash to pay for their own hosting from a variety of separate companies which made it much harder to take them down…

A heads up to all – you are not customers of facebook. The customers of facebook are the advertisers, their investors, and depending how many conspiracy theories you believe maybe even the CIA! They only want content what helps other make money, not “free speech”.

    Agree 100%.

People are whinging as if it’s their right to have those groups on there. It’s Facebook, not a government sanction sound-off board! Your rights on there are whatever you agree to when you sign up.

I’m not on Facebook, if the CIA want to find me they’ll have follow me like they used to in the olden days…

    Your MySpace account?

Dont have one of them neither 😉

murdochspace was only really any good if you were a DJ or musician as it let you stream your tracks for free and it went to shit quite soon after Murdoch took it over and tried to squeeze cash out of it (although TBH it wasn’t even making any money).

I’ve actually been using the Internet for 20 years now, having stumbled across it by accident in University in 1991.

Even at the start it wasn’t a good idea to discuss anything too controversial openly, nor expect a free ride all the time. in fact I got in a fuckload of trouble for using the net back then and was chucked out of uni and nearly arrested!

Although there are way more cool things you can do with the Internet today than two decades ago its a lot more commercialised and controlled and monitored than back then.

PS: if anyone is interested or just wants a laugh I’ll see if I can dig up pics of the equipment used to get online back then..

Yes please, and do tell what it was you were looking at that got you chucked out of uni. I wouldnt have thought porn had made it on the net then so i’m curious

i have to admit.. im a facebook whore. although im becoming closer and closer to deleting my profile. it takes up too much of my time! 50% of my friends live in different countires… thats where facebook comes in handy. its nice to know whats going on in their lives and keeping in contact with them.

as for this whole activism thing. i completly agree with you all… what happened to being anti-capitalist?

it was rare to get a graphic terminal, let alone have naughty pics to look at!

I was exchanging info about what were good and bad pills which you weren’t supposed to do on academic networks as it “brings the University into disrepute” – although something we now all do without a second thought.

Also apparently BT charged the uni for each link to each country and I was going through about 5 different countries to get the data, so the uni was getting a extra bill..

A fast link then was 9600 bits per second. (todays broadband links are thousands of times faster!)

I will try and dig up pics of the equipment and put it on the computers forum

they’ve made it hard to delete accounts on facebook, there’s no option that i’ve ever been made aware of which multi deletes everything in the slightest helpful way if you want to rid a lot of info on your profile in one go. so to delete your account in a way which would make it hard to come back you need to delete every friend individually and delete all pics/videos and statuses! when people have 500+ friends and thousands upon thousands of statuses it’s pretty damn long to delete bit by bit.

wish someone could hack into facebook and take down the network so no one could use it but pretty sure that place is pretty locked down security wise.

There is a total delete option…its a bit tricky to find and when you do it you have to confirm your deletion after 14 days, not before then, you are out…..
