Is there a fold up bike that is also a bag (as in folds up into a bag – I’m not looking for a fold up bike and a bag they have to be attached to each other, if there is such a thing).
My friend is thinking about getting a bike but doesn’t have storage space and doesn’t want to walk bike’s into his place incase the tyres are muddy. He thinks fold up bikes are “un-cool” but would get one if it was attached to a rucksack or something as it then has a “cool factor” in his mind. :laugh_at:
Sort of – you can get a bag to put a Brompton in but neither it nor the bike itself are cheap.

A suprising number of young lads are riding around on Bromptons here, I’d associated them with middle aged men who commute to Liverpool Street every day…
I keep my bikes in what was the dining area of my house, in the end I took up the carpet and tiled it with dark coloured tiles (of course this might not be as feasible in a rented house, nor in the limited space of London). The bikes are worth more than the carpet anyway..
he only has carpet tiles in the living room and rubber tiles every where else, but he’s gradualy doing the place up bit by bit and eventualy will have a floor that he doesn’t want to get anything nasty on. Also he lives in a flat so storage space is scarse and he own’s a fair bit of junk. He’s got an outside cupboard but he lost the key and it’s perminently locked shut. So unfortunatly it’s alot to do with storage. Alltho idealy he would get a mountain bike for fitness riding. You have any sugestions on a good one as well? (he wants to go off road and up steep inclines with it).
Ta for the help
main thing about mountain bikes is not to expect one too cheap and go to a real bike shop where they have time to give proper customer service, and make sure it is the right size for him. there are a fair few decent bike shops in London nowadays…
This looks cool for a folding bike, it has more of a normal looking frame, you can (supposedly) take it off raod and it’s got 21 gears plus a carry bag

That looks pretty decent – I’ll show him that ta.
I’d have some concerns TBH over a folding MTB, especially one for only £149. I would certainly inspect the folding bit very closely, you wouldn’t want it collapsing under rough conditions, that would be very painful! I did see one (also sold to the military!) a while back but it was bloody expensive…
the Brompton is popular because it is tried, tested and robust for London’s roads (and the potholed ones of Ipswich!) It must be becoming cool as it was young hipster lads riding them last time I saw one rather than old codgers..
if the outside storage is safe enough to put a full size bike in, I’d suggest drilling out the lock with the lost key, and then replacing it with a better one (taking care not to lose the new set of keys!)

Yeah I was thinking that. How much do you think is a reasonable amount to spend on a decent one?
if he’s wanting to go off road about £300 as a minimum (it will get even more expensive if he wants suspension etc…). Realistically though if most of your friends riding is going to be commuting to/from work and longer rides only on weekends a hybrid might be more practical, although a good one is about the same price..
Na he’s gonna be using it for training and probably to take abroad at some point to actualy go up mountains on (or big hills lol). It’s purely for fitness perpouses and not really for travelling to and from places (alltho it’ll be used for this aswell it’s not the reason he’s buying it).
