I think the rats are in far less danger though than humans or even dogs (which also carry out this task).

These rats, although larger African species, are too light to set the mines off (you would get through a lot of rats otherwise, they aren’t cheap to train and even pest species have rights).

there is some sort of chemical in the samples infected with TB that the rats can detect. (this is as much of it as I understand…)

The site is pretty but not that well laid out, when you click on one bit the pictures change and links appear at the bottom of them which lead to more detail including more detail and research reports..

It seems like a really good idea TBH, whilst the Africans don’t have lots of money to spend on top-end medical equipment they have enough to put together a reasonable lab, and rats are plentiful (and they are far better treated than most other lab animals and would otherwise just be seen as pests or even eaten as bushmeat!)

it makes a change for lab rats to be carrying out the research rather than the subject of it 😉
