That’s very close to home all of a sudden..

Will not say I’m surprised though, things like this can happen everywhere..

But it’s terrible it happens at all 😥

My thoughts goes out to all the people involved :group_hug

The Finnish village of Jokela, where an 18-year-old gunman killed eight people and himself at a high school on Wednesday, was quiet as night fell, with friends and family of the dead and injured in deep shock.

Candles could be seen burning in many windows – a Finnish traditional mark of respect for the dead.

“This is a peaceful place, nothing like this has happened and nothing like this is to be expected either,” Tuusula mayor Hannu Joensivu said.

Eight people were confirmed dead in the shooting in southern Finland – one day after a video predicting the mass killings was published on the internet.

      Rest of the story

I know little of Scandinavian politics Ange, what its the situation like there in terms of gun crime?

Obviously I’m disgusted but also quite shocked at the similarities between this particular incident and the recent on e in the U.S where the guy posted his threats on youtube beforehand.

I mean are shootings common in Finland or is this as I think some osrt of copycat attempt based on a US situation?

        From Wikipedia

        Quote:
Finns have third most firearms in the world per capita (right after United States and Yemen), totalling over 2 million registered privately owned firearms. Gun related homicides are rare, comprising 14 percent of the total number of homicides, which is comparatively low.

Guns and other weapons are tightly regulated. One must separately apply for a gun license, which cannot be given for “security reasons”. Even other weapons, such as pepper sprays, are regulated. Carrying weapons, including guns and knives, in public is not allowed.

        I believe it’s a copycat too..

And I do think,we will see a lot more crimes like this in Europe/ Scandinavia..

its more to do with social pressures and intense anger/competitiveness particularly amongst young men..

Even the Yanks didn’t shoot up their high schools until about 20-30 years ago, And this was all despite the high level of firearm ownership in that country..
