House music history was made when Farris took his demo to Relief Records. Hanging out in the Relief office was another young Chicago DJ called Sneak, who also just made his first demo. Farris and Sneak both had their tracks signed. The Farris Wheel EP was Farris’ debut release for Relief in 1994. Gene Farris, alongside like-minded musicians such as DJ Sneak, Paul Johnson, Derrick Carter, DJ Rush, Ron Trent, Boo Williams and Glen Underground formed the new wave of notorious, soon to be globe-trotting Chicago DJs and producers.
When asked about his future in music Gene Farris passionately replies, House music is my one and only true love. I’ve been with her for over sixteen years and never plan on leaving. She’s my peace: me and the music. The international demand for the elite Chicago House sound has kept Gene Farris busy gigging around the globe for over the past ten years. Gene Farris is the sinister minister of dance music’s changing sounds. Farris’s unique dexterous DJ style that includes extended sultry, melodic blends with tuff beats makes him a party favorite here around the world.

On Tuesday, Febuary 18th, we have a very special treat at Focus. Brooklyn’s very own Tortured Soul will be gracing us with a Live performance on Focus’ stage. You CAN NOT miss this night. Trust me! If you’ve ever seen Tortured Soul Live before you know how awesome they are and to see them in a venue as intimate as Focus is flat out amazing. FYI Last time we had Tortured Soul we sold out, so presale tickets and/or early arrival is strongly suggested for this very special event.
With their simple 3-piece line-up, the band are a breath of fresh air for the dance floor-weary masses tired of dry club brands serving up DJs-by-numbers. Bringing all the right elements of soul and disco heritage into their music, you’ll experience a Tortured Soul live set as you’ll experience a great DJ.
Rose and violet lights fall on three musicians decked out sleekly in skinny ties, pressed slacks, and starched white shirts. The mass of bodies gathered before them pulsates with a unified enthusiasm. Sweet soulful vocals rise from the man in the middle, an effect rendered all the more captivating by the fact that he is concurrently beating out an unrelenting backbeat on the drums. Flanking him on either side are a bassist who jumps up and down to the rhythm as he generates the throbbing low-end, and a keyboardist whose cool composure belies the fire in his fingers. This is Tortured Soul.
Born of the simple yet adventurous belief that modern dance music can be performed completely live, Brooklyn’s Tortured Soul packs dance floors with their unique live performances, while their recorded oeuvre pushes the genre boundaries of soul, dance, and pop.

“I look at my job as a modern day traveling minstrel, to bring new music to as many places as I can, and expose obscure records that, otherwise, might go hidden.” While Mark Farina may be able to sum up his job description in a sentence, there is much more to be written.
Since 1989, Mark Farina has been traveling the globe performing at literally hundreds of shows a year, sometimes DJing both of his preferred styles in two different rooms at the same party. At other events, he’s been known to play extended sets that lasted over eight hours. In his House sets, Mark is known for his uniquely effortless journeys on the jazzy side of Chicago House, mixed up San Fran style.
This wandering record minstrel has played to incredible crowds all over the globe. Consistently drawing new fans to his style of chunky-funky rhythms and deep underground house, Mark plays upwards of 200 shows to over one million (1,000,000) club goers per year. Voted in the top 20 DJ’s in the world by MUZIK and BPM Magazine, his taste making skills continue to turn the heads of seasoned veterans as well as youngsters just getting into the music.

Raised in a family with a musical taste steeped in rich Mexican culture, Victor Hugo Ramos was born with rhythm in his veins. At the pivotal age of 16, he would sneak into clubs in Tijuana to soak in the waves of early inspiration. Driven by a beat he could not ignore, Victor bought his first DJ setup and began mixing songs that were making an impression on him, regardless of genre. This forward-thinking mentality would soon become crucial in the development of the Harvard Bass sound.
