Forest fire operation continues

Firefighters are still battling against a forest blaze, which was the scene of an illegal rave at the weekend.
Crews from across Norfolk and Suffolk are expected to be at the Forestry Commission land between Weeting and Methwold for the rest of the day.
More than seventy firefighters from eight stations were called to the forest at about 4pm on Sunday, following reports of three hectares of woodland ablaze.
Phil Berry, fire station manager at Thetford, said the operation was made more difficult by the presence of about 200 people and 80 cars for an illegal rave.
“We had quite a severe fire in the forest and undergrowth and was spreading to a crop of standing corn. We were also faced with a lot of members of the public and it took a long time to confirm that no one was in the affected area,” he said.
Crews reduced the blaze “significantly” by sunset on Sunday, but were forced to adopt a “watching brief” during the hours of darkness.
Six appliances were back on scene yesterday morning to dampen down and tackle the fire which had spread to underground peat troughs.
Station Manager Berry said officers were working on a rolling shift pattern to avoid dehydration and was hoping to extinguish the fire by sunset.
“It has been difficult because of the heat we are having to work in. It is a very messy job and arduous because we are having to dig the peat out.”
He called for forest users to use common sense and not to start up BBQs, open fires or use smoking materials in woodland areas.
“We would urge the public to please be aware of their acts in woodlands at anytime, but particularly now when it is very dry and the chances of a fire are high. As this demonstrates, it has a huge impact on the resources needed to fight a fire and affects a beautiful forest.
At the height of the fire on Sunday evening, more than seventy firefighters were on scene from stations in Methwold, Brandon, Thetford, Downham Market, Swaffham, Newmarket, Wymondham, East Harling and Watton.
I saw this on the news this morning but didn’t immediately think it was near a rave site or connected (presumably lots of people go to Thetford forest for cycling, picnics and other activities)
FFS – even though I expect whoever set this fire did so through carelessness than malice – this is really going to fuck over the reputation of rave crews
/me just heard a burst of two tone horns coming from the A-road which goes towards BSE/Thetford (i.e fire engine warning other traffic it is joining slip road at speed)
another quote from edp24
Mike Taylor, business manager for the Forestry Commission, said a combination of extra people, drying vegetation, and hot weather posed a huge fire risk.
“We want people to enjoy the forest, but the key message is that we under an extreme fire risk and we need the public to be extra vigilant and careful. That means no discarded cigarettes, broken bottles and BBQs.”
He added that illegal raves were causing a “major problem” for East Anglia’s 40 woodland sites, which caused an additional risk at weekends.
The warning came after around two hectares of vegetation was destroyed after a blaze broke out at an illegal rave at Weeting on Sunday afternoon, which was attended by around 200 partygoers.
Six fire crews from Norfolk and Suffolk were at the Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Protection Area for most of yesterday to dampen down and tackle the fire which had spread to underground peat troughs.
the coverage parties are getting this summer is really bad
the tek in cornwall and now a forest fire
there was a really small party on a traveller site near me at beltane… no problems except a couple of complaints about noise. but since the tek, a bunch of locals have got together at a parish meeting and claimed to police that farm fencing was smashed up for firewood, people were shitting on agricultural land and the music kept hundreds of people awake
none of which is true. there was no fire. there was no shit left behind (the site has toilets in most of the buses that are there permenantly). everyone there knows the people living on site and there’s no way any fencing was damaged (the site isn’t even next to farm land… it’s next to a big electricity transformer and main road)
small in comparison to the backlash that will occur after this fire, but it’s a taste of things to come
:hopeless:
Oh boy this is not gonna look good. Maybe it was a local who was prepaired to go to extreme lengths in order to give ravers a bad name:you_crazy. Or just a stray fag but. Its a real fucking shame though, that would have housed thousands of creatures.
When I was out cycling earlier I came across a large patch of grassland on fire. Ironically I had decided to leave my phone at home (I usually take it out to snap pics or just in case of an emergency!) so couldn’t call the fire brigade immediately and it was spreading pretty fast! When I got to the nearest public building I was pleased to hear that someone had contacted them already.
Not sure if it was arsonists but I noticed a smaller black patch next to the large expanse of burning grass. Maybe they had a little test and put it out then tried it again and left to let it burn.
what I don’t understand is that these events have been going on for some time, including previous heatwave years yet this is the first time I have heard of a fire breaking out…
someone, somewhere is being way too fucking careless at these events
and people aren’t looking out for one another as much as they used to..
incidentally it seems a lot of people panicked; got dispersed from their friends and East of England Ambulance units also got deployed as they had no idea how many people were present and thought people were trapped in the fire zone..
OK I wouldn’t have expected everyone to have an “assembly point” – or maybe that should have been a thought?
BTW with the Ambulance involved this now means emergency service staff in about 7 different counties will all be made aware (yet again) of the “risks posed by raves” as the merged services share info across all regions..
I reckon that’s something worth considering from now on when crews party in wooded areas.
Handing out info sheets at the beginning of the party is a good but a lot of people just toss them on the floor or are too spangled to read them.
this is a quandary:
do you include this kind of planning as standard and make it easier to prosecute the organisers as it is obviously well organised?
or
omit this kind of planning and risk these kinds of incidents being blamed on the ravers but make it harder to prove who organised the events?
CJA and PEL/TENS laws make it an offence to have properly organised unlicensed events and the laws make it difficult to have licensed parties as they become purely commercial in an effort to cover the costs involved in organising them…leads to a ‘free party’ prohibition in effect and this causes events to be more underground in their execution
more underground = less visible organisation and less safety protocol in use
regardless of the yea or nay of organising parties with/without licenses [and i can appreciate both sides of each argument] there is a very real risk factor at work here and it is one that worries me deeply
what worries me is that in an effort to stamp out these parties the authorities are taking us back to the days of alcohol prohibition and illegal bars – they are pushing a large section of the public, who happen to like dancing, into the arms of the organised criminals who will eventually be the only people with the means to hold these parties and who will care the least about the safety of the ravers or the public at large
Follow the forest code
Guard against all risk of fire.
Protect trees, plants and wildlife.
Leave things as you find them, take nothing away.
Keep dogs under control.
Avoid damaging buildings, fences, hedges, walls and signs.
Leave no litter.
and also have a look at:

Not sure if it was arsonists but I noticed a smaller black patch next to the large expanse of burning grass. Maybe they had a little test and put it out then tried it again and left to let it burn.
Was it down the cliffs ?? I see a fire down there this afternoon
this is always a risk with looking too “organised” but it shouldn’t have to be a matter of the crews having to nanny people..
its basic common sense TBH.
If you are doing anything in the forest or any remote area with your mates surely people should look out for one another; should a fire break out or other emergency occur after the initial (and understandable) fear people should try to ascertain where their friends are, get suitable help (from the Emergency services if required) and then get them all together to a place where they are safe and the professional responders can then be left to do their work unhindered.
Even if people are spangled on drugs they should still have some sort of survival instinct (I’ve managed to deal with all manner of situations when completely hammered).
Perhaps something which may have exacerbated this is that parties today seem to now attract a more dispersed crowd – a lot of people attend an event just because “its something to do” and may not even get on with other groups of people there (group politics, jealousy over girls etc) so they don’t talk to each other as much, sit in groups in their cars and no one therefore is quite sure how many people are actually at the event!
I also get the impression that this blaze broke out after the party was winding down so people were sketchy/on comedowns (definitely would have been a bit heavy to wake up to this sort of situation!)
this was already the case in the 90s – excessive licensing prices and cops closing down events at short notice meant that it was indeed only the criminal fraternity who were prepared to risk the cash investment required to put on licensed events.
Near by yeah.
Suffolk OB are in Norwich today with a load of photo’s of that party, they are looking to identify people and prosecute… they have just showed a load of photo’s to to a m8.
