While the mainstream media (or louise mason of bbc fame) have run scared from documenting our scene, for whatever reasons, it has inspired me to get a documentary made chronicling the new wave of Free Parties, as although theyre on the rise, they are still underground and not known about by the mainstream. This might be a strenght that will be lost if this happens, but then if we have more folks on side, maybe we wont get as shat on…
What i would like to hear from you all is who has video footage of parties, and who would be willing to send me a copy of their footage. I know a lot of people will be thinking- “whyou? its my footage, i can edit, send me your footage”. Fair does is alli can say, but i have the time, energy and contacts at the mo to make a broadcast documentary. if anyone would like to help, has any advice etc, post now. if anyone has some footage to donate, pm or email me and ill sort out how to get it down.
They say write what you know about, so i think the docu will centre around the rise and fall of Raves in surrey, as i think it’s idicative of the scene in general. I will add comments from other crews, media, police, ravers, locals, organisers etc, interspersed with positive rave reports and footage of how well some raves work. If everyone can try and be diligent with the camera next season, i’ll try and get some broadcast quality cameras and operaters to our next lot of parties, to swank all the mini DV footage up.
Who’s with me? I think this could be blinding
Given the current climate and that this project would be entirely controlled by ravers I think its a good idea – I’ve been critical about stuff like this in the past but mostly because a mainstream producer has tried to take control.
If scum on UK garage/grime scene are getting bare airtime and dragging the entire urban music scene down with their antics (I bet its because of them half the cops think raves should be shut down – they think we have crack and guns) its got to the stage we must put our positive views across.
There are risks (particularly to the journos as cops often try to seize production equipment to halt a project, they even do this to BBC staff)-but they can be minimised like any other risk.
With 80% of the SE on full on zero tolerance we need to get our side of the story across to more “normal” people. Some will no doubt refuse to tolerate, but others may be wiiling to compromise.
I would be wary though of using larger “broadcast quality” DVcams in raves though, their presence intimidates people who are not used to the media. Also make sure each camera op has backup from the party crews against the overly paranoid (and those who realise that DVcams will buy a considerable amount of rocks on the street). There is loads of miniDV footage on the box anyway;the reason it is often pants is due to mainstream tv cos and camera ops being lazy rather than equipment limitations.
another thing – its now obvious with the way “evidence gathering units” work if we don’t document our scene and explain it to wider society the cops will – by force if necessary.
Cheers General, just went on squatjuice and got mauled. four pages of posts in 15 minuites, tho, well impressive, if slightly mental. good to see passionate people bringing the ruckus, and it does provide a good balance to the relative tranquility of this site. made my adrenalin pump tho.. check out the thread, it started the same as this, but ended quite differently

I recon squt juice trolling should be an extreme sport…what else can i do to wind them up?
Check out this site- its why film cameras were invented. makes me proud to have gone to UWE (they produced these videos). includes recent interveiws with spiral tribe and desert storm crews- the foundation of free parties. Goosebumps.

Nothing. Winding each other up is unfortunately part of that board 😀 – people often do know each other IRL so usually it stops (just) short of actual physical violence at raves when people encounter one another.
what was said anyway? I can’t read SJ from work, its blocked..
ijust copied the start of this thread on sj, got accused of bein ob, told it was a stupid/ silly idea, got called a cunt, that i didnt know shit, that i was trollin, that i was gonna broadcast info about dealers and rig owners, that nothing ever changes except for the worst etc.
can totlly see where theyre coming from, and its out of fear more than anything else. considering how antiestablishment i am i was well shocked to find people so totally devoid of hope and inspiration. got through in the end tho, i think.
luckily the havok crew backed me up, and there were a couple of people defending my corner, but most thought that i was gonna make attitudes to raves worse, which i dont think is that likely, considering theyre on such a militant countrywide clampdown, these guys didnt seem that aware or positive at all.
on the plus side, in an hour there were four pages of responses, which was aturnup for the books. even tho it was mainly negative, it was cool that there were nuff heads on the case.
now on an unfiltered net feed so had a chance to read the SJ “debate”.
Can fully understand the worries, but I am amazed hat people still think the rest of society doesn’t already know about rave (whether they accept them is a different issue)
FFS parties have been going on for 14 years now! The last couple in my city got full page local news articles. Raves have also been widely featured on mainstream media (both fiction and current affairs) for years, usually fairly negatively. The term has also been corrupted by the UK garage scene 😡 I can remember only a few months ago watching an episode of the Bill where they raided an illegal garage event; there was a scene with crack dealers and armed cops pointing matching Glock pistols at each other.
Type in “free party” on google and there are bare links to sites which tell you what raves are all about, how to put them on even some (out of date) lists of partylines, and both PV and SJ are widely featured.
TBH videos could be way less hassle than stuff like the party photo galleries where there are photos of all the usual suspects and even people’s motor cars and vans without the registration marks obscured!
if people are worried it is relatively easy to make a project that only “trusted” people can see – don’t put it on the internet where you cannot vet who downloads it – simply put the final copy on VHS and only let your friends have copies!
The technique of distributing such an item is called samizdat and was used in the Soviet Union where things were far harsher. even if cops did get a pirate copy it will be fuck all use for evidence gathering anyway due to the poor quality.
I can see both sides of the argument and i’m still not sure what to think.
I’ve always thought bringing our lifestyle into the limelight is a bad idea. But I can see what you and GL are saying.
I’m undecided. The one thing that concerns me is that any positivity created by the docu will help piss of the anti-rave people (be it government bodies, police, middle englanders etc) to provoke them to go out and produce plenty of reports/articles slamming what has been presented and bringing in to public view the darker side of free parties. You know, that small percent of stuff we all hate ourselves but can’t seem to rid the parties of. This will be portrayed as common party goings on.
I think it will be a positive thing for the docu to be made and distributed correctly. Just not sure about the national broadcast.
BTW I’m Totem on SJ incase you wondered USE. Despite some of the immature/nasty comments I do love the place. I like the way Partyvibe is a complete contrast though. Kind of Ying and Yang.

True. I can understand why people worry though. I do myself. Maybe if done well then it is time to stand up and try and change some opinions. Suppose it might not make people hate us any more than they already do.
Yea, squat juice was a well good laugh, i have to say. a wicked reminder of how varied the scene is and how many diferent types of people love raving. blatantly anyone who knows…
am blatantly gonna be double aware, if i do make this film, of all the implications, and tread pretty softly. its well good to get anyones opinion on my ideas, they wer furiously debating it, it was sound. prefer the pace of this site, tho, get more considered and detailed discussion. im well glad that theres both, Bio is spot on with the yin yang ting.
what does anyone think of the rave battle thread. i might have to ask for a gallery to put up my sketches.
http://partyvibe.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2383
we could run a competition for the best idea for special moves and characters.
or is that another rubbish idea?
if it weren’t for websense I’d still use SJ – but because work blocked it and i work long hours sometimes I can no longer keep up with the pace on there; particularly as trolls can bury a lot of good stuff within a few hours…
the rave battle stuff sounds excellent; ISTR there was some freeware/open source 3d-games engine but sadly I haven’t kept up with the techie knowledge needed to put this sort of stuff together. Where I am boring database work makes the cash but pretty pictures don’t (but I know damn well what I’d rather do 😉 )
i should be able to put the animations together on flash, and the my techie mate should be able to game it up- we havent found anything we cant do yet (touch wood), so by jan recon ill have a couple of characters for a test fight. (hope, hope)
BTW what does ISTR mean? ive no clue..
ISTR = I seem to remember….
