all telecoms providers (which includes mobile companies, fixed telephone providers and ISPs) have a contract with Ofcom (Office of Communications, the Government Department which regulates the media and comms services) that they will assist the Emergency Services when requested to do so, including shutting down services to “prevent illegal activity or guarantee public safety”.
Their license to provide telecoms services is dependent on complying, so they have to do so even if it loses them revenue (mobile firms must make shitloads from the rave scene!)
They were doing this back in the 1980s when raves first started anyway, and more recently phone lines regularly used by prostitutes and drug dealers have been shut down and/or monitored.
unfortunately partylines are usually pay as you go numbers and/or kept by people who don’t provide as much revenue to phone companies as corporate contracts so the companies are prepared to lose your custom, particularly if cops threaten them with hassles from Ofcom (which can result in a fine or even loss of license!)
Didn’t realise they had done this before. It does make sense to do that but i have never known police to use this tactic before now. I wonder what provoked them to do it. And which police force instigated it. My guess is Operation Pell in the south west who probably heard/thought that the party could have been an alternative Glastonbury event.
NB: Thread moved to free parties section and stuck as its quite important
definitely seems like an op pell sort of thing…..
its usually the bumpkin areas which bother with this as they have the spare time/resources and high-tech crime units, (Wiltshire actually arrested some people for trolling a messageboard!)
the cop ringing you up was probably just a cock-up because one force didn’t tell the other they had already done the surveillance op and had the line disconnected.
in the 80s the head of CND (peace campaigners) Bruce Kent was woken by his home phone ringing at an odd hour (a long ring as if it was being rung from a manual switchboard) – and when he picked it up on the other end was a very sheepish Detective Inspector; BT had crosswired all the surveillance equipment at the exchange so when the DI picked up his desk phone it rang the target instead of being covertly monitored :lol_teeth
more recently in Germany, Deutsche Telekom cocked up with the billing and sent some drug dealers mobile bills with an extra change for tapping the lines (which should have gone on the phone bill for the Police station!)

That’s what i thought.
Never knew someone has been arrested for trolling message boards before , was that party related?
WE NOW HAVE A NEW PRIVATE PARTYLINE DUE TO OB INTERFERNACE LAST WEEKEND!! SO WILL NO LONGER BE USING THE OLD ONE. IF YOU NEED THE NEW ONE SPEAK TO ONE OF THE CREW AT THE NEXT PARTY OR MESSAGE ONE OF US HERE OR ON SJ.
how are they gonna get to your next party if they dont have your partyline?
you dont have to use capitals.
you dont have to use capitals.
Through word of mouth which is how most get to our parties. And our next party is with a lot of friends so people can call those lines and come ask the someone in our crew for the new number.
Caps because were trying to get an important message across and people to notice.

no – it was a board for former service personnel – someone had an argument and started trying to trash the database and posting viruses.
I very much doubt party message boards would be protected by the old bill (OTOH they don’t close them down because (particularly if moderators don’r keep an eye on things) they are worth more in intelligence terms alive than dead).
remember they can also pinpoint your whereabouts from the signal.
“they can pinpoint where you are with the signal”
Do me a favour, the Very best they can do is an approximation within a few hundred yards. This takes about 24hrs to authorise and is bloody expensive.
The OB are NOT going to do this, as they wont get the authority from the commission who run the authorities. Seriously.
Stop it with this scaremongering crap.
PS: The most they will do is monitor a website and partyline. They dont even bother posting messages as they need authority for this as well!
I seem to rember having the same problem with the phones back in 2002 or 2003
We would set up the party
go to put the directions up and be unable to get through to the answer service (no one else could get through either) so someone would have to stand by the phone and direct all the fucked people there.
It was really annoying and definatly not the voicemail being full.
I seem to rember it stopping after a while.
Fuck knows how easy it is for the old bill to do it n weather they need permission. or if it is even the old bill at all or just somthing to do with loads of people all trying to call the same number and crashing the network in some way.
peace

Wiltshire police replied to a post we made a few years back in this forum.
They said they were aware of “our stated intention to hold an illegal rave” and that any attempts to do so would cause them to take action.
Needless to say when we went ahead regardless they were waiting for us.
So we drove 40 minutes away to a different county and set up there instead.
On behalf of everyone who attended that party, I would like to say:
HAHAHA.
