he should either have left it where it was or retrieved it without taking a photo. I’ve seen certain things near 20 years ago I don’t even want to disscuss too widely on here today and certainly would not share photos of them nor take any in the first place.
Even what looks like “just a bit of sand” with the EXIF data stripped out is identifiable given enough local knowledge (for instance there are some kind of markers in the sand, and the action of wind and waves creates unique patterns. People who live in coastal areas and/or spend time at sea notice stuff like this, especially if they are hanging around waiting for packages to be dropped off ships).
Also in some countries you can post a letter parcel to a ship (to be delivered to someone on board or elsewhere at the vessels destination) so it would not be that odd for the Colombia parcels to have been marked.
