  • Quick biking question if you have a sec, do you follow this advice from the CTC;

    “How far out you should cycle will depend on the conditions but you should not be less than 1 metre from the kerb and should be further out if it is not safe for a vehicle to pass at that point (i.e. round a blind corner).”

    Just seems very counter intuitive (although I understand its better as you have more presence on the road) and I would worry that it will annoy car drivers etc

    Also noticed this;

    “The Highway Code specifically allows cyclists to ride two abreast”

    Never knew that!

    The CTC is correct – you ride as as far out from the kerb as required. you should not hold up traffic on purpose but if the road is narrow you have every right to be there as anyone else.

    cheers GL, it does say a metre at a minimum but I think I am going to use common sense as you suggest as that is too far out at times I would have thought, would hold up the traffic.

    you are entitled to go as far out into the road as is required. If you need to go 1m into the road to be safe then do so. Ignore those who may say cyclists pay no road tax, you pay for the roads in normal tax (VAT, duty on beer etc)

    Am I likely to encounter angry motorists with bigoted ignorant views then? tis something I have worried about

    you may get these if you are within 0.2m of the kerb or 1.0m. as the gutter is full of nasty items what may well puncture your tyres, its best to go out as wide as possible anyway, Even when I cycled in SE england I never had that many hassles, it is not as bad as made out to be.

    hm, never really gave it a thought. if the road is nice n flat then i keep in on the lines…

    if theres big dips at the side or its a shite road then ill go out as far as i want. angry driver can suck my testiclads.
