After a party my mate put the genny in a car on its side it was left like that over night and oil was everywhere when we got it back. Now it wont start up dont have a clue about gennys anyone got any ideas?
What sort of generator is it? I don’t know much about em but it sounds like maybe oil has leaked into the working parts and it needs a good cleaning!
^^ what cliffy said
you will need to work out what engine it is and find the service manuals.
Briggs and Stratton have them on line. Unfortunately Honda do not (you have to buy them from America)
There is a model number someone on the genset showing what enginer it is, worth googling for this.
Then find someone with a decent socket set, and a garage with enough space and lack of interruptions (i.e without loads of people crowding round, fag/spliff in hand) and a few litres of paraffin (to soak the various oiled bits in to clean them) (if you have any gary boy mates they may be able to help you here, assuming that todays gary’s actually do know something about engines and not just bolt-on accessories).
I suspect the fuel filter has got contaminated with the sump oil and that will need replacing for a start. Maybe even other bits and pieces (mostly filters)
There are lots of gardening/outdoor type places round our way though (particularly in Woodbridge/Nacton) who may be able to get the parts. (or you might strike it lucky and find some old boy what worked at Ransomes or similar place who would fix it for you for a few quid…)
cheers guys i’ll have a look at it in abit
reckon i’ll have to get someone else to look at it though
anyone know anywhere in suffolk that fixes gennys?
I reckon the best place to ask is your local tool hire centres. Somewhere that sells em will point you in the right direction! 😉
I’ve searched around but could only find companies who deal with huge great 100kVA – 700kVA type gensets (like what EDF bring in on trucks when a substation blows up)
either try the hire place or find one of them shops what sells small petrol appliances such as suffolk punch lawnmowers and ask in there…
Leave it for 48hrs, check oil, top up iff needed, re fill fuel, clean the oil off the spark plug. put on full choke. and it should fire up.
cheers mate i’ll deffiently try this idea first thanks
yep worth a try to get you going (might get you the rest of the season) but I’ll still look out for servicing places and info anyway for the benefit of everyone in our area, as theres a few of us what may need this!
I might need some small-medium size gensets anyway for work (I work out in the sticks and its not uncommon for the electric to keep packing up!), plus a mate of mine has one for the same reason, and we are also trying to look at the possibility of some legal events in this area so we will all need spares/repair for our gensets at one point….
petrol or diesel?
DJ Ritchie might be nearish to you [pv member] and is good with gennies

are you talking to me or gl?
Same as AHC said its just oil in the head/barrel, stick it up right for a while an it’ll be fine.
also when you’ve cleaned th sparkplug chuck a bit of petrol in the barrel before you put it back in and it’ll help it start.
Talking to you 😉 petrol or diesel genny?
Let it settle for 48 hours,
replace the air filter if it is covered in oil or dirty in some way,
turn on the fuel,
prime the generator till you can smell fuel [ this should flush any oil in the fuel line] and leave it to evaporate away as you have just flooded the engine/spark,
check the oil level in the engine and top up as required,
clean the spark plug
try starting the genny as normal
if it doesnt start keep cleaning the spark plug between times as it will likely be dirty. If after a few times this hasnt worked you may need pro help.
