depends how big the rig is 😉
OK assuming about a 3K rig and leaving a bit of power spare for other stuff, about £1400 new for a Hyundai silenced diesel. About £1000 for a similar petrol one. These are around 5kVA models. Other crews use a combination of smaller ones, which can cost as little as £300 (though I am not 100% sure about the power quality of these!)
Always better to have too much than too little but good quality regulated power, especially with modern equipment full of switch mode PSU and computers etc.
A friend of mine who does parties way out in Scotland with a smart crew what knows their stuff always suggests diesel are better for your equipment, though it does appear the newer Japanese petrol models are made with better regulation for use with computers etc. Japanese are smart as well – consider also the poor buggers had a quarter of their country destroyed by earthquake just a while back and the atomic power stations blown up. this sort of thing tends to drive fast improvement in stuff like smaller gensets..

Cool. Interesting to know. Yeh can imagine that put them through the ringer over there and advances came in the Technology from it!
Well I hadn’t seen the “cheaper” hyundais being advertised as “smoothed output for computers before all that happened, and there do seem to be some new ideas in what is nearly 200 years old technology..
Also JP has much friendlier relations with former military enemies such as CN, MY, TH, SG, VT etc. In somewhere like Malaysia even in town the electricity can be intermittent, my mum moved back there for a bit and she said sometimes you were lucky to get a day or a whole week with steady power, so a lot of smaller businesses want a genset as a backup. Also even folk what live in mud huts etc (there are still a fair few in SE Asia) still want to watch telly and go on the Internet and for that you need electricity 😉
gennies can cost from 2-300 all the way up to a grand and more for an average powered genny :L investing in one now so we can ge tout and about again
I have a small 2k genny we used to use for parties way back.
