But hardly enough to make it look like a comet. By all accounts it looked like it was on fire. Im still going with the theory it was a candle balloon which may have set on fire.
2 b honest its probably more sinister if it was OB flying a robotic helicopter over a peaceful festival in the middle of the countryside. at least aliens wont arrest u for smokin a joint in a field then conviscate ur mdma :you_crazy
there are other sites which say many types of cameras and lights can be fitted depending on what it is being used for
Glade was a mess with roads being blocked and parts of the site under water. the only way i recon you could of got a decent idea is to use one of these thingy-ma-jigs. peaceful does not mean it isnt watched.
i guess we’ll never know.
thats fine but havin police walkin round on site puts a downer on things, and they did actually arrest people for smokin weed then search them and find the rest and take em down the station. they dnt even do that at more high profile fests so they wer definitly tryin 2 make a statement
conveniently my m8s gone 2 italy for sonica so theres no evidence! ill ask her wen she gets bak if i remember…
after reading all the replies I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a Police drone, whether or not this “UFO” was the same thing.
Even if there weren’t floods TVP would probably have deployed it, and however much we disagree drugs are still illegal and festivals aren’t above the law…
TVP hate festivals anyway because years ago now (1970s – either just before I was born or when I was a little boy) one of their detectives got shot dead by a drug dealer at the Reading Festival when doing a random vehicle check.
Anyway their drugs squad have held the grudge against this sort of event all the way since then (I suppose they feel every drug user/dealer they catch is avenging the death of their officer). They keep a very close eye on the festies, Reading, Womad, Glade etc so they would certainly use a drone if they had access to one. BTW if they did, your ticket money helped pay for that toy…

Ah come on that’s a bit conspiracy theory isn’t it? I bet most of the TVP staff around in the 70’s don’t even work any more. They keep a close eye on festivals because it’s their job, not because of some 30 year old grudge. It’s like saying today’s generation of ravers holds a grudge against the cops because of the Beanfield.
Beanfield, what Beanfield? :you_crazy
of course its their job to watch for drug users – but the shooting of their detective isn’t gonna just be forgotten about whether its 3 years or 30 years ago. Older cops would have retired but some are (just) still around and would remind younger constables/probationers about the incident (particularly the newer generation of cop who actually often have more liberal views!) to make them feel more inclined to bust “druggies”
TVP press office also remind the local news media of the incident every so often – I certainly remember it from Reading newspapers fairly recently (I only left in 2006), it was mentioned in some detail alongside the usual sort of spin about the “brave work” TVP drug squad do “keeping festivals safe from the menace of killer drugs”
Anyway, whatever the underlying reasons, enforcement and surveillance of the underground music scene in the Thames Valley area has always been fairly full on – I lived there for much of my life, for many years was involved with both legal and unlicensed parties there and experienced it at first hand a few times.
The impression I get (from my own personal experience as well) is that cops still see “todays raver/recreational drug user/festival-goer as tomorrows potential full-on junkie” just like they did in the 70s,80s and 90s…
Beanfield, what Beanfield? :you_crazy
Many in todays generation of ravers (a far wider agegroup than many realise) are still partying or involved in the scene who are old enough to remember this – and just like the cops do the elders tell younger people, in some cases their own family (including their children) about what happened.
I regularly speak to people 10-15 years my junior who are well clued up about the Beanfield and also the early acid house days from their own research on the internet…
Perhaps “grudge” may come across as too strong a word as it implies bitter feuds and bloody revenge – but look at it this way – whatever “side” you were on, if something had happened in a historical conflict where one of your lot was killed or hurt, even if you didn’t seek conventional revenge against your opponent you wouldn’t just forget about it – you’d try to learn from the experience, maybe not seeking a resolution via overt force but via ingenuity or technology..
for the cops its stuff like helicopters, CCTV and surveillance drones (to get intelligence without getting “too close” to potentially hostile elements) , for ravers it was stuff like in the 90s using technology like mobile phones and the net to (at least for a while) stay one step ahead of cops and locals..

More like you hold a grudge against them. If it was a drone Im sure they would have used IR as then it wouldnt be seen and the camera would have a better view with more definition. It seems the logical choice.
nah, of course I’m not gonna agree with everything they do but TVP have only ever handed out one drugs caution to me and that was only due to me not stashing stuff properly – they’ve let me (and quite a few of our mutual friends) off on many other occasions, including times when I thought I was defo going to Court.
I also saw at first hand what shapes their more recent prejudices (like about a third of the original ravers actually becoming drug addicts) and wasn’t even criticising what they were doing – and its not me paying £100+ in ticket prices that go partly towards their budget…
I’m merely stating the level of surveillance/enforcement that cops deploy for legal events in these days and possible reasons.
it seems that a lot of festival goers seem to feel (or hope) that cops will just let people take and deal drugs openly at festies and are “surprised” when things are a bit heavier – had a look on gladtalk myself and there are loads of posts complaining because cops apparently clamped down a bit more this year (although other posts claimed there were less cops as the weather worsened :laugh_at:)
As I said I didn’t think the drone (if one existed) and the “UFO” were the same thing anyway.
Also found gladtalk posts about the “UFO” but no posts about the drone yet, a few rumours about various surveillance ops, and odd posts about people flying helium baloons, kites, and other RC toys (like small planes you can buy on line) around the site.
Couldn’t find any info elsewhere that TVP had such a drone but Merseyside do and cops do share resources across force boundaries these days. (the scousers lent loads of surveillance kit to Suffolk last year)
That said to use one for monitoring the site would have been way cheaper and safer than using XA97 (helicopter) particularly with the weather…
Fair enough, certainly sounds like you know your stuff. It did sound a bit paranoid when you said it though.
i reacon it was an alien coming to anally rape us
