And corporate America still denies the problem..

yep, i cant beleive these people…how can they justify their position? A lot of the comments i heard surrounding climate change is that there are other ecological issues which need to be tackled as well, which i agree with, but i dont understand how that means we shouldn’t addresss this as well.
when kyoto came into effect last week, a lot of people were saying that it doesn’t go far enough, which is true, but you can only go one step at a time, and if they dont sign that, they wont sign anything.
i reallly beleive socialist style control of industry HAS to happen, all my mates who studied economics have been brainwashed into having this religious faith that the “free” market is the only valid model, and will cure all ills in the end. which has been proved time and again to be utter bollocks.
education has now shifted away from just setting up students to learn about their subjects as they are traditionally defined, which did have its flaws, to now merely being prepared to earn money to fuel the capitalist machine, which is infinitely worse. nothing means anything any more except profit. we are being conitioned to think: “fuck the people, fuck nature, as long as i earn as much money as i possibly can, i’m doing my bit”.
its enough to make you want to do a hunter s thompson.
Yeh i saw some fast disappearing glaciers a couple years ago…
one in particular, in Chilean Patagonia (the name eludes my right now) was photographed filling a lagoon several miles across in 1900… small boats could just about navigate around it then…
now it looks more like a few lumps of ice in a massive lake / lagoon
i do think that there are natural changes / disasters happening which people attribute to human-caused climate change without any real evidence :zip: and that humans have always tried to find an explanation for extreme weather (the gods, the soviets, CO2)
but there is plenty of evidence that our input thus far has not been one of preservation of our delicate world’s ecosystems… even to the point that Pentagon documents leaked (last year) stated that climate change is the biggest threat to security in the next few decades.
for fuck’s sake… here we sit, with PC’s burning electricity produced from buring fossil fuels.. the damn things even made of oil (plastic)! what am i gonna tell my kids :rain:
an equal and opposite reaction to education in, say, soviet russia, or communist china… every society prepares it’s children to be productive in the system they will live in as adults
in a lot of areas in the uk you can get “green” energy to your house. http://www.energyhelpline.com of course you will get any old lekky that is about, but you are paying for a future of sustainability…
tell that to ya kid 😉
I think a lot of the normal providers will have a “green” tarriff where you pay extra for money to be ring-fenced in order to provide power from renewable sources….
But IMO this should be the rule rather than someone having a “choice”…. lets face it whose gonna pay more for a service?
BTW the whole ‘leccy industry has been fucked by privatisation – its only “cheaper” to buy power from a company in another part of the country because the former electricity boards replaced expensive engineers and support staff with call centre operators and sales people, and has put off capital investment to increase shareholders profits.
The power networks in some areas are 30-50 years old, the resources to fix them are scarce and we still use yet more and more energy every day…
its funny, having consumer choice is the new definition of freedom in the west..when we talk about defending our freedoms its invariably about defending our right to but massive fuel guzzling cars, clothes made in sweatshops, and heat our houses as much as we see fit.
i do not think this is a good idea. choice is not nesseccarily a good thing.
unfortunately we are talking about freedom for the few at the expense of the many.
one of the forerunners of ecology and sustainability was my man Buckminster Fuller, who coined the term “spaceship earth”, highlighting the finite nature of resources on this planet and the need to ration them (once again, a socialist premise).
