There’s a Dutch version as well, in modern times its fairly often used as a Police dog and also to keep geese and small children safe.

    QUICK, GET CLIFFY

They are kids. There is a lot of underage drinking and smoking in that picture. The two meisjes are drinking (probably some kind of alcohol) direct from a jug.

That bit of paper in the corner says

“soo d’ouden songen, soo pŷpen de jongen”

which in modern Dutch (they change their spelling every few decades!) is

“zo de ouden zongen, zo piepen de jongen’”

As the elders sing, so the young will pipe (a pun as well) 😉

Jan Steen (who painted this and many similar pictures) seemed to be not only very fond of animals but considered then to be far smarter than humans…. below is a link (in English!) from the rijksmuseum mentioning the symbolism of these pets in his paintings

The one at the front in the green dress GL lol and the one in the yellow skirt is holding the bong for her!

Perhaps they are ahead of their time as the Dutch were only just conquering Eastern nations where they got the idea of using “indian hemp”. But there is also a frying pan discarded in the corner, I didn’t think they had discovered ketamine either :laugh_at:

I saw one on Nacton Road last week, it was some old boys pet (I am certain it was one of these and not the similar Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, as I once was planning to take a “lost” spaniel home with me (although its owner claimed it). A lot of older Dutch people migrate to Ipswich because there are many transport links, they know English, the tax is less and they can bring their pets over on the EU passport.

I have a King Charles Cavalier, although they’re similar they’re wider and heavier built although they aren’t big dogs by any stretch of the imagination lol. I actually quite like Kooikerhondje’s though, they’re nice looking dogs and the ones that I have seen have all had nice temparments too.

the one what turned up in my office was fairly “catlike”, I’d initially assumed it was one of the village cats running under the desks and trying to blag food (I work that far out in the sticks sometimes in converted barns, so it is not uncommon for all sorts of creatures to simply walk in through the door). it belonged to a middle aged lady who part owned some buildings nearby. The dog was supposed to be sleeping in a basket in a nearby industrial unit and one of the junior staff was supposed to watch over it. but it had decided to escape this whilst stock was being delivered and wander around.
