Ok, I’ve finally managed to get my levels down to stop any clipping. I’ve also worked out how to record mp3s at a decent bit rate.

Now my only problem is that the recording has ‘Skips’ in it that ruin the flow! Any help?

I’m recording using Audacity, linked via USB to a soundblaster creative external soundcard, linked to rec out on the mixer.

Can anyone help?

wat spec is your computer, any mp3 recording errors usually come from slow systems

It’s a 5 yr old Vaio laptop with XP! Pretty shit but I’ve been able to record plenty of mixes before. It’s something to do with the external sound card and the USB I think.

the higher the bit rate .. the more “juice” it needs … so if you been recording at a low bit rate b4 .. and now its a higher bit rate .. thats probably the problem

Check the usb port you are plugged into is usb 2 not usb 1.1 that could cause the problem. If thats not the case try defragging your HD as slow write rates could also be causing it 😉

Unplug anything else from the USB ports (if you can get away with it), as anything else on the same port shares both the bandwidth and the power on that port (480Mbit burst rate bandwidth, and 500mV power).

If that doesn’t help, make sure you have as many programs as poss shut down (all those icons in the taskbar). Also remember if you’re using a laptop that the HDD will likely spin at 5400RPM tops unless you have installed a 7200 model yourself – means the write on the HDD will only support recording at CD quality (ie 44100KHz 16 bit). Anything more will be too much for any sustained length of time – the 5400RPM spindle speed means your HDD transfers far slower than the advertised bandwidth of standard ATA100 or 133, or SATA 150/300.

Cannae think of anything else that hasn’t been mentioned already… raaa

Well. I think the problem was that I was trying to record at 32-bit, so I put it done to 24-bit, which stopped the skipping alright. (But should have been 16-bit!)

But I was recording in stereo, and one channel was slightly out of sync with the other.

And now my laptop has completely crashed, when I turn it on it says its dumping the memory, and now won’t even start in safe mode.

So basically it’s fucked.

Luckily I was pepared for this, so anything important is on an external HD, and I use my flatmates computer for the net.

5 years is a pretty good innings, and luckily I start a new job on mon, so will be able to get a new laptop in the next few months.

keep the old one, if the HD has actually failed than replace it (they aren’t that expensive) and reinstall windows on it but without any of the usual bloated crap what goes on.

Try to get the minimum amount of Sony drivers to get the thing working rather than loads of “custom” software, and use only AVG as anti-virus software…

that way you can have a dedicated machine optimised for music only and use the other one for net, work or whatever other things you may want a computer for…
