A friend of mine has been done for bringing back way to much baccy. It wasn’t even hers but she was found with it.
HMC have issued her a paper fine which, including costs amounts to £1036. She is unemployed (on the sick) and has no way to be able to pay this amount.
What’s the best advice here anyone please?
wow wtf, only thing I can think of is to get in touch with Citizens advice bureau. It may be that she can set up to pay it in small installments or something.
Yeah, that’s pretty much what I suggested. Cheers Daft!
Also afaik, it’s only full cartons that count, so if you’ve got like a whole carton broken up into box’s and stuffed in diferant pockets a couple of single packs in one bag, a couple in another you can get another carton or two across legally (depending on how many of you their are). I’d check out the exact laws on this though as I’m sure if you’ve got too many single box’s they’ll obv say something. But if you are getting the maximum amount you’re allowed, you can split 2 cartons between 3 people legally i think, providing they are single boxs.
Like I say check that out, as it’s something I’ve been told, but never looked into myself, but have also never got in trouble for doing it either, but this could be down to luck.
I also heard something about if they are opened boxes it doesn’t count either .. so in theory you could have 10 open box’s of 20 on your persons and just say, you smoke 200 a day lol. I’d check all this out though as it’s hear say, but I know there are specific laws as to what they do and don’t allow, and you can get away with bringing in a little more then you’d think at first glance for certain, but not much more.
She had 12 sleeves of ten pouches per sleeve!

Probably some to smoke, some to sell. She says it wasn’t hers but she carried it through.

TBH I think HMRC arrange this anyway if there is no clear evidence of deliberate criminal activity, or if its the low end of the scale with little chance of repeat offending. if she is on benefits they just recover a small amount from the DLA benefits, until the fine is paid. womens prisons are stacked full as it is with prisoners who have been bringing in kilos of class A drugs, and tobacco is still legal (the actual offence is evading the duty on it)
