Honu Eclipse 2010 > Festival Program
“Total Solar Eclipse Festival of Tribal and Cosmic Arts for Peace”
Easter Island – Rapa Nui
Festival Dates : 7 – 13 July, 2010 (7 days of music, arts, and culture)
Camping Dates : 1 – 15 July 2010 (Free to all festival ticket holders)
Venue: 50 Hectares of private grounds on the slopes of the islands highest volcano. Approximately 7km from the town Hanga Roa. The venue has excellent visibility for the eclipse, and boasts sea views with incredible sunsets every day. The venue also possesses an abundant water supply coming down from the volcano. It is situated in one of the most remote areas of the island, so therefore doesn’t interfere with any protected archaeological sites or traditional tourist trails.
Festival Concept
The central concept for the festival is the “HONU”, which translates to “Sea turtle” in Polynesian languanges. The Honu is a sacred animal in all Polynesian cultures and is related to the occurance of the eclipses.
In Rapa Nui language and its ancient writings, the “honu” is the symbol for the darkness and solar eclipses. The “Honu” is inscribed in the Rongorongo (the sacred tablets and writing of the early inhabitants of the island) and are thought to have predicted the occurance of Eclipses’ on the island.
The dark truth is that the Pacific Sea Turtle is in danger of extinction at the hand of human unconsciousness. Plastic bags are mistaken for jellyfish and cause almost instant death to the turtles. It’s a fact that 50% of dead turtles found in the sea have been found with plastic in their stomachs. The same is occurring with the eco-habitat on Rapa Nui, in great danger for its ancient deforestation and the shortage of ecological solutions to save the environment. Once upon a time Rapa Nui was a paradise, covered in palm trees and a sanctuary for thousands of birds. Its beaches, a breeding ground for the turtles. Now it is a baron landscape, with little native flora and fauna remaining.
Therefore, beneath the symbolic meaning of the Honu, the festival has the peaceful intention to minimise its own ecological impact and balance it giving sustainable technologies to help preserve the environment, and therefore preserve the cultural heritage of Rapa Nui.
So, the “Honu” concept can been understood as a feeling of peace and respect for all the ancient cultures and natural environments in danger of extinction, just like Rapa Nui.

to me it is the south american version of hawaii!! hahahah
i would LOVEEEE to go, too bad the money side is too steep for me and even though that is a decent reason to go i would still rather go to hawaii
always wanted to since a was a lil kid looking at the globe
Sounds so amazing… i am sure i won’t be able to go due to money/not getting the time off 🙁 I wonder if the locals of easter island appreciate a big party on their island, i hope no mess is made.
its done in conjuction with the people native to the island, its actually on there land, not the nature reserve (i think)
