your country and the drugs culture there encourages users to test the pills more, so dealers would find bad pills are hard to sell (perhaps they end up over here!).
Set and setting is important too.
Your friend was enjoying their holiday, and what was probably a fun environment at a rave or club with less anger and paranoia, so might not have been so critical about quality of pills.
All that said, I have also read about contaminated pills in NL, with the same bad stuff we get here) I am learning Dutch at the moment so try to read a bit of Dutch news every day…)

see i have never been in a place that has ruined my night, ive seen masses of people fighting and loved sitting there watching (when on xtc ofc) and similar with any other situation…..ive had bad (i shudnt say bad i shud say shit) pills and gr8 ones and none have gave me a bad night.
Im lucky that i dont get effected by paranoia and anger when on pills at all
