OK it will work and I have much respect for LadyAda and Adafruit as a company (they make a lot of good stuff for anyone learning electronics/embedded systems and are one of the few tech companies with a female CEO) – likely she is doing this out of solidarity with the lass who is being stalked by FBI for being one of the devs of TOR (in spite of effectively being a contractor for the feds as well) but like many fossbytes articles “a little knowledge can be dangerous”.
In reality you can now only get away with using TOR in countries that already have a larger amount of freedom.
This does likely include (as well as the EU) India, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh and other nations that previously would have been less accepting of its use; but not only will it lag up the connection (which they do at least warn of in the article) and the RPI only has 100MB/s networking anyway and it not the fastest device for network hardware.
Added to which more and more of “normal” sites especially those dependent on ads or carrying out commercial business restrict TOR users or block them altogether as they are associated with fraud or it means they cannot geolocate the users for marketing (even if they begrudingly tolerate adblock use) – or the website owners just blacklist the entire subnets or the countries where the exit nodes are (in Europe/USA they are always in middle class areas and part of ISPs associated with big Science universities)
I have had had to disable TOR on a “secure” laptop someone working at the BT research had built for a young couple at the housing co-op as it had become unusable for anything they wanted to do online including ordering organic vegan food for the house or even going on their actvist sites as rightwing hackers increasingly took advantage using TOR it for DDOS attacks and hack attempts.
Worse, this “friend” had landed a high paying job in London and just disappeared without even letting them know the root password and they didn’t have any backup media for their personal stuff so I could only warn them the whole thing might not even be that secure and to get a hard drive to transfer their personal documents so I could one day reformat tht thing to work properly.
Yeah all very true and TOR is very slow and high latency to begin with without additional limits. Also the number of sires blocking access via TOR is continually increasing and as you said, countries like China take great efforts to block the TOR network but their are ways around it apparently.
Have heard some stories of people running exit nodes being arrested on child porn charges and god knows wat else after inspecting the packets flowing unencrypted from his exit node. Think 1 man in Germany was arrested at least 3 times.
added to which the Great Firewall is more open than many realise
just tried a few sites on various test portals

hadn’t expected BBC or all the Catholic sites (and one European Buddhist sites) to get through so easily especially as ICN is increasingly like a better version of the Guardian (its environment news is particularly good) minus the creepy trackers – amusingly Jez Corbyn turns up there as often as Jesus :laugh_at:
Microsoft office 365 corporate shows as blocked but I think the test site is resolving to the IE/NL European servers and it is not an illegal product in China as its advertised for sale there
As for the arrests, were those in DE or AT?
I read about the Austrian bloke getting nicked but the feds found he had himself been intercepting and hoarding some of the lower level kinderporno pics (teenagers but <18) and he was bust with enough cannabis for an intent to supply charge
The EFF ended up looking like twats as he was hardly blameless especially as he had also broken AT domestic data protection law by intercepting and stealing the exit node data to start with. the charges only resulted in relatively minor penalties under AT domestic law – he had the servers returned though most likely with all sorts of intercept code and a gagging order.
Out of curiosity I read a while back the guidance for setting up an exit node in DE and which ISPs tolerated it; they matched up with cheaper ISPs with less levels of reliability and customer service run by younger, less trustworthy staff often more desparate for business. There’s other info I’ve unearthed about VPNs which I will add to the posts about theses.
The arrests I read about were in Germany bud, I’ll try find a link to it. He was never taken to court or anything, seemed more a case of the law just forgetting he runs an exit nose, several times.
Those tests you did GL, how are you able to test access from inside China? Some sort of proxy hosted over there or something?
Think this is the one.

thanks – it is nearly 10 years old though and BNetZA/BND tend to learn from their mistakes quickly.
there are many sites that check connectivity in China you can find on google; most likely some kind of proxy server/DNS monitor – if you try to resolve DNS from China Telecom via the UK from a Linux shell they don’t like that and refuse the request (although they have no obligation to let that through any more than British Telecom would be obliged to provide non paying customers in Beijing with DNS services)
Was shocked to see it’s age when I found it actually.
folk in mainland North European nations were very early adopters of TOR – alas, the bulk of them clearly seemed to be disaffected and sociopathic young men with centre-right wing political views although often intelligent enough to have day jobs in IT, very often working for the public sector organisations they despised. The BND / BKA did a few raids in 2006/7 because of all the kinderporno they found but returned the servers althogh not soon after the profs started being able to geolocate traffic.
Just read an Austrian report on the case about the chap who got nicked which seems more accurate / detailed than other stuff – this really was hard reading (not just because its in German but the subject content which described exactly what he was guilty including in some detail the kind of material for, refers to another site which may or many not be darknet and mentions him being caught on record boasting “Du kannst Kinderpornos auf unseren Servern hosten” amongst other stuff.
he also was a regular user of Dexys for ADHD and yet had a firearms card but had at least one gun outside the calibres he was licensed for and fuck loads of knifes; whilst living in Graz which is a built up town; not some mountain cabin surrounded by Wolves and Bears.
he has removed all the stuff about the court case from his personal blog; though it seems that the AT cops have returned his computers and let him carry on with life provided he stays out of further bother (though this escapade has cost him €30 000 in fines and costs).
it is only recently that TOR project has been emphasising the work of those brainy lasses in the dev team as otherwise their reputation “ist wirklich ins Scheiße durch alle diese Arschlochen” – worst part of this is it makes everything worse for those who do use it for good reasons (and I am sure there are some).
Today I learned even lot more German about subjects I never really wanted to have flying around in my brain at night [it is bad enough how young adult Mädchen / meisjes are treated even in middle class unis across DE. NL and UK – to avoid Angst and nightmares now I have had my final cigarette for the night it is soon time for bed and 01:00 rosenkrans/rosary (RMNL is of course 1 hour ahead) – perhaps seems ironic in the circumstances and I know its not explainable by “rational thought” but after reading this on top of all the other stuff what has been happening to friends and people both online and IRL it seems worth doing to me at least (if you haven’t committed much sin yourself or affected directly by bad shit then sometimes you feel obliged to pray for others…
Just read a female TOR dev from the US who just moved to Germany was being harrassed by the FBI for reasons they would not make clear, even to her solicitor.
