From what I can see the article doesn’t mention rooting – mainstream tech sites are really wary of this as it encourages further deployment of adblockers / privacy and they are often dependent on funding from advertisers.
Even with a rooted Android phone you are still to some extent putting lipstick on a pig due to Googles choice of Java instead of C/C++ (or a near derivative thereof) for controlling the important bits of the device used for “old style” communication – for day to day use I still use an old Windows phone as its quicker and easier to use for phone calls, texts and taking photos.
