  • Radio shack (rat shack) used to operate in UK (and BE, NL , FR) under the brand name Tandy (as there was already a shop called Radio Shack in SE England which as you may expect sold Japanese amateur radio equipment) – by the 90s it got undercut by Maplins (who are British) as their components were often higher priced and American types rather than European (they can sometimes be interchanged but you needed to check the specifications).

Tandy walked away from the European market in the late 90s so Maplins started buying up their stock (and raising their prices).

Hope Jahren is about my age and probably has North European ancestry (she studied at Copenhagen as well) – at the time she was at Uni not only was specialist equipmennt way overpriced many companies wouldn’t accept business below certain price levels or without an official uni or trade account (the same was true for RS, Farnell etc in UK) so raiding the skips and buying parts from any local component stores was common worldwide for scientists and experimenters. Folk did (and often still do) hoard any old electronics in garages, basements, spare rooms etc and it is often swapped amongst hobbyists in the same regions who congregate around universities (they do not necessarily need to be students or profs)

I thought ratshack had gone bust but apparently its still around; not sure if they still run shops are are web only today (maybe Shakyamuni would know for sure?)

I remember Tandy and was well after they disappeared when I learned the radioshack connection.

the branding is curious as the original group in USA was called Tandy – also used for the higher value computers they sold from late 1970s (which were quite powerful for small business use and cheaper than many equivalent CP/M systems).

Down south the Radio Shack branding was occasionally found on small items but Archer, Realistic and some others were used; just before Tandy disappeared they started to sell many more “radio shack” branded items.

USA Radio Shack branches have always tended to be better stocked for “makers/home constructors” as well as finished components; but as they invariably resold Japanese/Taiwanese/Chinese items (so Amazon which deals directly with the Chinese suppliers took over) and recently Mouser and Digikey started allowing individuals to purchase using credit cards as have RS, CPC and Farnell and keeping stocks of components for retail is less profitable than finished items its not surprising the physical stores have declined.

Although the Chinese who supply Amazon do sell the components in real life stores across South China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore, according to Professor Yong you can even buy stuff like surface mount chips at local markets.
