  • When skating today (against my better judgement), had a reasonably good sesh. After a fair while I joined in on a game of Berrics (bad idea), a half cab- kickflip was the set, everyone else did it, then my go…….I roll too fast, and pop the fucking trick and my back foot (my left foot) nose dives into the ground, literally snapping my ankle around and on to its side.

The swelling is unreal, and the colour…..it looks like its come off a corpse! now I can’t skate for about 1-2 months to allow the tendons and ligaments to re-connect to the bone………

    :cry::cry::hopeless::hopeless::cry::cry::hopeless::hopeless:

Also, this is the first time in 12 years of skateboarding that I’ve damaged my LEFT ankle………fuckin shits goin’ downhill lol

    Shit dude.

You would have been better breaking it. Sounds like you have severely strained your ligaments at least if not torn them.

Did you get a cast on?

I tore my ankle ligaments in my left leg just before I was 20 – there is NO PAIN LIKE IT! It was my own stupid fault though… broke my tibia and fibula in 2000 playing football, after 5 months in plaster, 3 operations and a metal plate it was June 2001 and I had the cast off and instead of doing the sensible thing (physio, rest, rebuild) I fired myself straight into preseason training, 3 days in jumped up to catch a ball for some reason went to land one legged on my left peg and the ankle gave where. Tore the ligaments in the ankle, bang another four months.

Worst thing was that I was sent home with a “sprained ankle” and remember having to sleep in the living room in a chair with my foot in a bucket of iced water to numb it sufficiently so I could actually sleep. Next day my dad carried me to the doctors pretty much and bang another four months in plaster…

I would say it ruined my football career, but I was pretty shite anyway.

There are some drugs you can take with kestosterone in them that will help heal and strenghten the ligaments and tendons, I tend to use Mega Cissus pills when training now.

Trouble is once you do that once, your ankle will NEVER be the same again. I’ve rolled my left ankle so many times since, in spite of a years physio on it after the ligaments healed 🙁

Sorry to hear that mate. Make sure you work to strengthen before you even think about skating again.

    And read up here:

    Ligament Damage & Repair – PhysioRoom.com

Invest good money in a decent ankle support too for when you do go back – I spent about £60 on mine but for the life of me can’t remember where I got it from, you can buy cheap ones but you do get what you pay for.

There’s some good ones with reviews here:

    Ankle Supports – Ankle Supports & Braces – Supports & Braces – PhysioRoom.com

I don’t work for physio room lol… but I should earn commission!!!

I did enquire about weither placing it a cast would be an idea, but the consultant I saw said with the amount of swelling I should expect, a cast would most likely break it!

Nowadays I stretch and ‘limber up’ before I even step foot on my board, just cause 12 years of ‘abuse’ has really taken its toll on my body….

I’ll have a look for those kestosterone pills, gotta get my itouch fixed so, I’ll have to wait a little while.

I know right? once you bugger your ankle up its never the same, my right ankle is sooo mullered it cando a FULL 180 and it doesn’t hurt or pull! I think I need a looooong break from it now, time to get back to the river bank I think!

Got soo many ankle braces & supports but they are all too big for me, I’ve got really big feet, but there really skinny, so I may have to ask my GP to refer me to a specialist to have a good one made for me cause I can’t keep on with this…..

I can’t advise it more mate. A good support is critical – I had a cheap one I got for about £2 in Asda and it was awful – spent the money on a good one and I’ve not rolled the ankle in football since.

I can roll it walking down the bloody street though – its horrible 🙁

Ice packs and a bucket of iced water mate to reduce the swelling as much as you can and it’ll help numb the pain.

I had a flexible cast for the first four days then they put a hard cast on once the swelling had come down but if you are sensible with it you’ll be fine.

The worst part is sleeping. The slightest twitch of your feet at night and it shoots pain all through the foot, wakes you up and its a horrid cycle. That’ll ease off after about a week though.

You’re not foolish enough by the sounds of things to make the error of rushing back and fucking it for good at least 🙂

can you tell me more about what this is please? It sounds interesting and something that I could really do with as loads of my cartilage is fucked. allready taking some other supliments for my joints .. but havn’t noticed anything yet (have only been on them a few weeks thought)

Oh and sry about ur ankle gaz … I remember when you came down before and you were having problems walking (wasn’t sure if it was your knee or ankle that time … possibly both come to think of it :s)

    Yeah of course mate.

First step is repair, so you need to ensure that your diet has a lot of Vitamins C, D and E in it. This will aid the repair process. Lots of protein too. And sleep. The body repairs itself so much more during sleep than when awake.

Then its about what you can add to help. I used a cissus supplement when I fucked my ankle and it helped the process no end, I also still take a couple of them whenever I play football as it puts a lot of additional strain on the ankle in spite of the support.

I’ll link the wiki for Cissus as you are probably like me and like to do shitloads of research before you actually put stuff into your body (unless its a party of course haha): Cissus quadrangularis – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Its basically an extract that helps build and repair ligaments and tendons, and can be bought in powder or pill form. I use myprotein.com for all that kind of stuff (these are the pills I use: Mega Cissus from Myprotein) but feel free shop around mate.

You can also find human growth hormone treatment which helps and aids the rebuild process, I can’t give any constructive feedback on that as haven’t tried it myself but the theory is sound enough having had a quick look online (10 minutes research does not make me an expert though haha!).

For cartilage repair and strengthening, one of my best mate’s swears by glucosamine, but having spent the past 20 minutes researching this for you, the evidence appears sketchy. Glucosamine – What You Need to Know About Glucosamine and Glucosamine – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for more information. He has really bad problems with his knees, he was a semi-pro beach volleyball player, and he said that a course on this helped him immensely.

I already take glucosamine 😉 … I probably need to get more sunlight though as I’m on my computer a lot these days and you can’t beat the sun for your vid D intake (D3), what is a prohormone and will help your body heal and grow on it’s own, but it also has direct connections to the health of your joints.

I try and have a healthy varied diet, but slack off too much. I try and have a high protein diet, but eating lots of meat to get protein can become expensive. I’m gonna get some whey powder at some point when I can afford it just to top up my intake and some pasteurized egg whites and design a nice healthy protein shake for post workout.

My joints have been getting slightly better tho in the last month as I’ve managed to finally plan a workout what doesn’t pull my shoulder too much (I’ve been having problems with it a lot in the last half a year due to the joint where my clavicle bone meets the top of my rib cage being really loose). I’ve managed 3 sessions with out a single twinge in my shoulder what I’m so happy with, as like you (although on a smaller timescale) I would have to keep taking several week breaks to let my shoulder heal again so really wasn’t progressing like I wanted to with my fitness regime.
