Japanese people are hard bastards (as most of Asia found out in WW II) but the population isn’t that big for the size of the entire country. they are however quite strict about health and safety and have a lot of CCTV watching of course some brainy dude has worked out how many peopel can fit safely into the train carriage.
JP is a bit like Scotland – Most of the nation (about 80% of it) is actually forests and mountains and fairly wild – unsuitable for anything else, there’s volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides and bears running around – the people only live in the other 20% of Japan.
These days, someone travelling a short journey might instead ride a bicycle than put up with the crush on the metro..
