This sort of thing IMO shows the true breakdown of British society, its not even running a red light when there is no traffic, this just shows pure contempt for others…

Even if I am just on my bicycle and I encounter a crossing patrol (although its rare for me to be about that early!) I will stop until the lollipop lady/man gives the signal the crossing is clear – IMO its not just being safe but setting an example to all the kids for when they want to use the roads later in life.

Can people now not just spare the few minutes to help the next generation get around safely?

Incidentally Wokingham is a “middle England stronghold” rather than a low-income area..

Police clamp down at school crossings – Wokingham

Thames Valley Police in Wokingham are warning drivers that if they fail to stop at school crossings they could be issued with three penalty points, a fine of up to £1,000 and the loss of their license.

The advice comes after School Crossing Patrollers, or ‘lollipop’ persons as they are better known, complained to Wokingham Borough Council that an increasing number of drivers are failing to stop at crossing patrols.

PC Julian Weal, Road Safety Constable (RSC) for Berkshire, has met with lollipop people and representatives from the council to inform them how they can help the police catch the drivers responsible. All drivers reported to the police will be summonsed to court.

“School Crossing Patrollers carry out a vital role in getting our children to school safely.” said PC Weal. “I want to warn drivers that we are cracking down on drivers who ignore this law and they will be summonsed to court for failing to stop.

“I find it unbelievable that some drivers are so impatient that they will risk the safety of school children rather than wait for two minutes at a school crossing.”

Executive member for highways and transport Cllr Keith Baker said: “The safety of children, parents and school crossing patrollers is of the utmost importance and the council welcomes and supports a clampdown on drivers who ignore the law.”

av noticed alot lately at crossings that drivers are going through on red, i think its really arrogant, am surprised theres not more accidents.

am also finding it hard to cycle through town cos drivers think they own the road..loads of times av nearly been knocked off my bike

it is pretty annoying sometimes, i had to drive at 13mph for about 10 mins whilst already late for work, but still i would NEVER risk someone elses life just to gain time

what i’ve noticed is that if someone is stuck in a traffic jam it almost always their own fault for not using public transport… if all the people in the traffic jam used public transport, there would be no jam

next time you are stuck in traffic, tell yourself that you are a wasteful idiot, park your car and walk / get a bus / train / bike

I dont really agree, i get stuck in less traffic if i make my own way to work as i avoid all the congested roads. I get to work quicker on my own than the public transport can and it actually costs me less money in petrol/Tax/
MOT and insurance than it does to use the public transport.

    Also its so unreliable…

it depends on what part of the country you are in

I get caught up in traffic jams on my bicycle sometimes when the A14/A12 has delays and all the lorries divert through town (I don’t ride on the pavements if it isn’t allowed as there are old people./kids/dogs and the pavements are too narrow to ride safely)

London has (despite whingers and terrorist scares) extremely good public transport (although it is not actually that big an area)

Reading “city” area is OK for work times but shite in the evenings

once you get to bumpkin areas like South Oxfordshire or for that matter Wokingham (where the report came from) it can be fucking appalling

I can get to the town centre in both Ipswich and Reading as quick or quicker than a bus at normal pace (I don’t class myself as Tour de France material.)

As for school “rush hour” I can avoid that by flexible working.

On the occasions I do encounter it I just think its the price we pay as a modern European nation for being able to reproduce freely and have free education for all these children – they all have potential in this world and a right to use of those roads, IMO its a price worth paying!
