India Bans Captive Dolphin Shows as ‘Morally Unacceptable’ | Environment News Service

India have made dolphin shows illegal as they deem it morally unacceptable.

“Whereas cetaceans in general are highly intelligent and sensitive, and various scientists who have researched dolphin behavior have suggested that the unusually high intelligence; as compared to other animals means that dolphin should be seen as ‘non-human persons’ and as such should have their own specific rights and is morally unacceptable to keep them captive for entertainment purpose,” the ministry said.

I did not even know that there was a unique South Asian species of dolphin!

Nearby Bangladesh has also declared a sanctuary area for this species (also found in small numbers in NP and PK).

The wider problem is enforcement, as these countries are big and pollution is also a great problem.

like, again i dont really know about this, but captive dolphins look like they’re having a lot of fun being the centre of attention and getting nice easy rewards for their efforts. maybe they enjoy our company?
