Israel Decriminalises Ecstasy
Israel’s Justice Ministry announced this week that people caught in possession of up to five ecstasy pills will no longer face prosecution, and explained that the change is ‘a case of adapting legislation to meet reality’ (Ha’aretz, Jerusalem).
However, the Ministry stressed that possession of even one pill will still be technically a crime and explained the new category of ‘personal use’ is designed to distinguished between users and suppliers.
The change coincided with the publication of a report in the UK by leading civil liberties organisation Transform which predicted that all drugs will be legalised in the UK by 2020.
“Drugs will be legalised in the not too distant future because prohibition is an ongoing catastrophe of startling proportions,” Transform director Danny Kushlick said as he unveiled the report, titled ‘After the War on Drugs, Options for Control’, at a presentation at Britain’s Houses Of Parliament.
“We need to consider more effective, just and humane options,” he continued. “In the UK, the prison population and property crime would be halved, drug related prostitution would end, opportunities for organised crime would reduce substantially, prohibition related corruption would disappear and drug turf wars would end,” he said.
The ‘drug policy road map report’ was immediately dismissed by British Home Office officials though was endorsed by a number of MPs and influential Brits including former Times editor Simon Jenkins.

i lived in Israel for some time.
all i saw there was hatred, state murder and torture, oppresion, violence…
how many other negative words can i find…?
buildings being thrown up by incompetant loons… those buildings WILL fall down in 5 years.
that British white paper just after the 2nd world war was one of the most misguided pieces of action ever seen by this world.
can you imagine if every persecuted minority in the world was awarded territory, and that territory was right on top of somebodys’ home?
it would be mayhem
oh, excuse me.. it is mayhem.
every bit of news i hear from that part of the world makes me want to puke…
zionists can kiss my unholy ass… personally
globalloon,
I totally agree with you, I was personally more interested in the British Home Office attitude towards this subject (& the bit about Transform).
Sorry if it made ya puke….:)

hmm this is a difficult one – and TBH I don’t think what the Israelis have done is cause for celebration. They are not welcoming raves with open arms but only doing this because their country is overwhelmed with real crime, hate and terrorism due to the political events globaloon mentioned and they need their cops and emergency services resources for other stuff.
And why just ecstasy and not other drugs? Most of us know that taking pills gives a short term buzz of happiness and a long-term feeling of apathy and depression – which would perhaps dissuade young people from becoming political activists etc. You can’t help but wonder about the real motives behind this.
If they did this in Britain I would of course be happier but the current situation in the UK isn’t actually too far off – at the worst nowadays small posession gets you a caution (little more than a half-hearted telling off from the sarge) and I’ve heard a lot of stories
about people geting turned over outside raves and their drugs (including pills and powder) merely being confiscated without anyone being arrested.
As for the Home Office, I’m not surprised. Even though there are actually more liberal minded people there (whitehall is a lot more “rebellious” than many realise!), Britains population (according to various surveys) is completely divided and entrenched on the issue of legalising drugs; its around 50% for/against – there is no way any Government in power is going to support such a controversial measure in the year prior to a General Election.
From my own informal research I’ve been shocked to find that many of the general public (particularly the older age groups) are more anti-drugs than some government agencies and the old bill! Shocking really..
oops, my response was rather over the top… no excuses, but I had been out celebrating 😮 and was all fired up.
Have to agree with Alex; this isn’t being done because of a liberal society, but because the police are just too busy to be tied up with drug users. A bit like the reclassification of cannabis in the UK.
The cops came to a hostel I was staying in in Tel Aviv looking for someone and were questioning people while they smoked bongs (!)
The US put a lot of pressure on certain countries that have relaxed their drug laws… I wonder what will be the response to Israel?
