Nicely bumped Tank Girl. Somehow I missed this the first time round.
I have to agree with Global. It could be that I’m just older and less connected with it but I look back and truly believe that parties and the culture were a lot better through the nineties and even in to the early nortys.
I’m not someone that believes parties were all sweetness and light back then, as they still had their troubles and violence, but the atmosphere, the buzz, the music and the less pretentious and more innocent party people all helped to make the “scene” (for lack of a better word) better back then.
I’m also not someone who would run on about “You weren’t there maaaaan, you don’t understand”, because the younger crowd of today still have a good time no doubt.
Like I say though, it could just be rose tinted specs.
Just look at some of the Castle Morton/early Fantasia videos and the answer is pretty clear a big sweaty gurney yes.

nice bump 🙂
well to be honest, you may all think that the old days were better – people were more optimistic and open…
well if you want it to be the same again, you cant mope about wishing for the old days. look to the future, be optimistic, open up to society and lets set it off again! 😀
without looking forward to the future you cant achieve the same atmosphere

I don’t think all of the early 90s was that much better – although people were “friendlier” it was false due to the effects of MDMA etc and when this wore off all the racial and gender tensions came back.
people forget that Castle Morton pissed off the rest of society so much the cops clamped down big time afterwards, and that Fantazia was organised for money and didn’t always deliver on its promises. Also there were a lot more real nasty gangsters closer to the raves due to the money to be made on pills…
the better times of raves came much more recently IMO from 1997-2001; when Tony Blair slacked off on drugs enforcement to get the youth vote and because he was too busy with millenium domes etc and the economy was booming so normal people didn’t care as much about raves.
also you can’t turn back the clock with regard to increased Police surveillance, and the backlash caused by badly organised illegal raves, particularly our area. People have actually had their farms/livelihoods trashed and the public purse has had to spend a lot on cleaning up Thetford Forest over the years.
This is why opening up to society is going to be difficult – why should people like farmers etc forgive and forget what happened when their land was invaded?
to be fair most 30 somethings here would jump at the chance to attend a well organised party where it wouldn’t be full of people spooned out on ketamine and not helping clear up
That said I have been to parties as recently as early 2007 when I thought I was back in my youth again (it was my birthday weekend, I so nearly told those girls from Thetford I was 23 rather than 35 :laugh_at:)
but by the time me and my mates got back to Ipswich we heard online that some ket-head had fallen from the big haystack and the Ambulance had to be deployed – none of which needed to happen. because the incident was so far out. the Police and to be fair many of the ravers had to carry the stretcher like they do in third world foreign countries!
This situation was repeated a fair few times at other parties that year, as well as loads of people getting ill from K and other drugs. By the Summer the cops (and NHS) had had enough and East Anglia was on zero tolerance.
The ball is in the younger crews’ court to see if they can salvage anything out of this…
i’m up to giving it a better public name – have some optimism GL 😀 it can happen – just gotta show that we are responsible – if drugs are a necessity then we would need to deploy more stewards (volunteers? or perhaps, a pool of volunteers each do like an hour shift so we all get our fair share of raving).. it could be kept quite safe, and personally id be willing to put in plenty of time to clean the place up afterwards… this kind of stuff would show that we are responsible and can organise the event well… but its not just up to the crew its up to the people to, but i look forward to making an impact :bounce_fl
all the serious stuff aside, it definitely was better 15 years ago
8000 people all dancing in front of one rig? would never happen now
not now, but in the future, possibly 🙂
there is a slim chance that a crew of younger people (16-21 or so) without significant drug problems or involvement in crime would be able to put on decent events, but they would have to overdeliver on any promises they made to wider society, make some compromises such as using TENS/getting permission to party places, and also stay together and as friends during all the boring/stressful bits (this being the most difficult)
are you planning on staying in EA as you reach your late teens/20s or going up to University in another area? (this is something to consider as a lot of crews are split due to this happening amongst their people)
