I’ve been seeing in the news about the recent job cuts in various branches of the uk. Seems like alot more will go but what i’m curious about is what happens if it’s mass mass unemployment. What would happen if you got laid off couldn’t get any work and pay the bills. if this happened to the vast majority of the country we’d all be pretty fucked wouldn’t we?
:hopeless:
this happened to a few of my friends recently who work for a call center, i was also scheduled to start the same job as them and they told me n quite a few others that they couldnt take us on
s’not like u to show sympathy for someone, Cliffy!
are u sure ur not comin down wi man flu… :laugh_at:
:hopeless:
if it got that bad the Govt would (re?)nationalise key industries and/or the economy would shift to a barter one.
This sort of thing has happened before and hasn’t actually resulted in the doomsday scenarioes many fear.
I expect people would be expected to work on “government work units” rather than just be handed out dole but it would be things like doing building work for the council, essential infrastructure maintenance etc…
even private industry isn’t just going to roll over and let everything collapse. In America during one recession the local electric company realised people couldn’t pay bills but needed a new power station built, so everyone what had debts got their power put back on in return for taking a job at the power station and they worked until their debt was paid (but also learned skills/trades)…

Whats a doomsday scenario though?
people thinking “oh, the world will end/everyone will starve/die” or the sort of scenes what appear in movies…
Look at it this way -even world war II didn’t make that much of a dent in the global population.
Also this September 364 babies were born in Ipswich hospital alone – and when I asked some people in the NHS they gave the impression this area has had a high birthrate for 20+ years.. Whatever happens in this country humans aren’t going to die out quickly!

Ah i thought stuff like mass rioting and total anarchy! raaa
well personally i think we could do without the media telling us everyday that we might be entering a recession. everyday it’s something different about it all and don’t think it’s healthy to be hearing this everyday. I know loads of people that are worried sick but i tell em ignore the papers and get on with it. 😉
mass riots / “anarchy” are easily dealt with even in less developed countries. the two sides of each faction are rarely equally matched, so one side will have an army or guerillas who will eventually win the war. If there is a risk of expensive infrastructure being damaged (particularly owned by foreign investors) the UN has a habit of turning up as well.
Even during the Soviet collapse the only place what got totally destroyed (by its own people!) was Albania and most of that eventually got rebuilt.
I think the media does exaggerate but at the same time I feel that freedom to report bad news is one of the most fundamental freedoms of the press – in countries where the media is always optimistic it tends to be state controlled.
yeah im going through a phase of not reading the papers really as its just the same old shit all the time. Im just getting on with each day. Young people without mortgages or families etc and that can move about, be flexible and have a creative/self sufficient/adaptable streak in them will probably be fine. People have lived through far far far worse without to much of a drama
although exagerrated, it is rough at the moment particular in trade labour
i’m now working so little hours for next to nothing, because there isn’t the work. it’s worked out i would be earning the same on the dole
i have to stick with the job though – they owe me hundreds in unlawfully taken tax (not paid to HMRC, but to the business) when i am earning less than my tax-free allowance. i need to secure original wage slips off them to acompany pay-slips in order to build a case (i aint taking them to court, but in order to prove im right) and i need to subtely ask for wage slips (i now know i should have kept copies) without them catching on that i’ve busted them (or no doubt the wage slips will be ‘lost’)
basically, thats my situation but i’m in a very bad sit. because the job i’m in is awful in many ways, treatment of staff and illegal taxing of people paid min. wage in first place… not to mention arguable cases of sexual harrasment from the cunt who’s doing all this
anyway, apart from me, some of my mates doing aprenticeships in bricklaying and joinery etc. are being laid off, even tho they get apprenticeship wage!
i drifted, but yeah its hit the trades hard…
repair, reuse and recycle…learn how to build small solar panels and wind turbines out of scrap. make funky, new clothes out of old worn out ones.
don’t waste food… i was at a local producers market in france last weekend and there was stall that sold every part of the pig, some of it already processed, some, like the snout, that you could buy whole to prepare how you wanted. last week i bought shin of cow from my butcher and cooked it for a long time, slowly. it is as delicious as any steak but costs next to nothing
save… put a brick in your toilet cistern, wear a jumper and some slippers, put an extra blanket on your bed, have a bath with someone you love, turn out the light when you leave the room
walk or cycle.. sneer at people who pay gym membership
being unemployed can be a shit situation but make the most of it… get loads of free training while you have the time and don’t have to pay… check out business link, train to gain, learn direct, open university… and if you still have some free time, volunteer for something that means something to you to keep your mind active and your skills improving
good luck finding a job. unfortunately the doomsday scenario is likely to happen so gradually that no one will notice, so it will lack drama… may as well put yourself at the top of the food chain
Well, Chris just got laid off…. 😥 He was a union carpenter making almost $19 an hr…sez they ran out of work. As soon as he told me ‘I got 2 paychecks’, I sat down……:hopeless: Always seems to happen right around the holidays too! :crazy_diz

Some good points there man. If i get laid off then first thing ill do is go straight to the dentists and get loads of free work done courstesy of the tax payer! :weee:
Went there (Dentist) the other day and they said it would cost a monkey to have some work done on ONE of my teeth. I told em to pull the fucking thing, i ain’t being swindled! Cheeky cunts eh! :laugh_at:
For a good indication get your local newspaper on the day it has the jobs listings.
In Bristol it’s the Evening Post, and we get the jobs listings every wednesday.
One week it was above 400, then it went to 350, then 300, now this week it’s around just 200… keep in mind that before the ‘credit crunch’ there were 1000+ job ads.
