  • if you know anyone in your local area and are prepared to hump shit around you should have work for a week cash in hand within a couple of days looking. I managed a 4-5 day week every week since leaving school until a couple of months ago when I got a full time job just from doing this. Think farmers, people with big gardens, builders, scaffolders, whatever. I know it’s not ideal but it’s £40-65 a day in your back pocket whilst you’re looking, and that aint a bad living.

Have you thought about maybe window cleaning? I reckon there’s some serious cash to me made. Most window cleaners charge £10 per house. 5 houses a day = £50, then take the rest of the day off. Know anyone with a set of ladders and a bucket?

You’ll be surprised, it’s all about having thr right attitude. You sound like you’ve given up before you’ve even started. Try taking a wrap of speed before the interview “Spud style”, you’ll walk the interview.

I need regular work not a few quid in me back pocket, cheers for the idea though. Plus cash in hand sounds a tad dodgy

no and some how I dont think the ladders would fit in my Yarris anyway :p

If you don’t want it then don’t look for it mate, but if looking for a job is going to be such a long haul, it’s a better income than the dole whilst you’re waiting.

luckily for the moment I am on incapacity so think that’s a bit more than job seekers but not sure how long that will last as they are scrapping incapacity I think.

aren’t they supposed to be helping you find work?

Its a difficult one for the employers too. A local employer I know took on a lad with the same medical conditions as yourself (declared at application) – he was fine for about a year but his work quality wasn’t always 100%, he would cherry pick interesting tasks and neglect others, and then when his workload slightly increased due to business requirements he had a breakdown and walked out. To be fair he was always friendly and polite to customers and worked well but simply couldn’t handle the pace of business. Now that employer is a lot more wary of taking on people with mental health conditions, as it costs a small business a lot of money to lose a member of staff after a year (when they had put cash into training him etc).

So it is pointless for both you and the employer taking on a job you hate, but at the same time no job is going to be 100% fun in the current climate, and workloads are always increasing. Finding one job worth applying for after an hours searching is about normal for times of economic recession – its what I found in 2001 when I was last unemployed.

The gov have pulled this really clever trick where the charity that was helping me and knew what they were doing had their funding taken away and told me to bugger off. They did this with the previous charity as well.

There is no help what so ever the job centre are utterly useless and just direct you to the website. Without specialist help form some kind of disability charity or at least someone who has a vague clue its gonna be hard. I wouldn’t employ me put it that way. Why take the risk when there are so many looking for a job.

Yeah the job centre is crap at helping you find a job.

I did have this lovely specialist charity who were used to the exact situation I am in and would help me every step of the way. Until that git Cameron got wind of it.

I was gonna suggest trying to get a job with the mental health charity (as presumably they need admin staff etc) but its no good if they have had their funding removed…..

yeah not much hope there 2bh. There must be people who end up ill like me and are never able to find work again, really hope I don’t become one of them. Have a horrible feeling a life on benefits is what awaits though. And given they are doing all they can to cut them that’s going to be even more horrible than it currently is. oh dear me what a mess. No real solution other than to keep looking and perhaps hope that I find someone who has had similar problems with depression and is sympathetic.

I know a lot of people of my age group who are in that situation unfortunately. TBH I had a close call myself with mental health issues in my teens and early 20s and the market is so ruthlessly competitive it is really difficult, many smaller employers simply can’t afford to be “sympathetic” in todays high pressure business environments! Quite often people who weren’t badly ill before develop mental health issues in the workplace due to the pressures.

The public sector used to be a lot better for being sympathetic employers (especially taking on people after long career breaks) but because of this they are seen as “soft” and subject to cuts, and big companies have also had to make a lot of redundancies.

That said I’d try and get as many application forms as possible, not everywhere does pre employment health screening..

even if they don’t screen I will need to explain why I haven’t had a job in 4 years or whatever it is. Its scary, the more I think about it in detail the more it seems like I have no future. Cant seem to think of any solution other than just getting lucky. Its all deeply worrying.
