Just to chime in about how to explain 4 years of not working… they don’t need to know.
You could have been doing many different things… travelling picking up odd jobs along the way, looking after a family member, etc… I would gloss over the reasons for not working over that time. After all… you want a job NOW and are motivated to get one and stay in it. Dont let any possible past negatives get in the way of the future positives!

how about doing some training whilst your still recovering ?
if you dont want to have public contact and want prospects – how about IT?
A dear friend of mine – who had depression and suicide attempts – drug use and not very good – if at all qualifications late teens / early 20’s – studied by himself and has done so well in IT securtiy and has a name in the business, is head hunted etc and is now earning £80K + a year, after a lot of hard work, commitment and self teaching, anything is possible

its an idea but what kind of training and how would I afford to do it? plus when happens when I find a job. So many questions and so few answers. I have looked on college websites and never really see anything that fits the bill. Yet I know it must be out there. What kind of course were you thinking? I would love to go into IT but always just assume it will never happen. In fairness it probably wont ever happen.
Hi Extraslim ,
Mate your so negative about yourself !!!! , i dont know why . you don’t need to pay for training or go to college!
People dump old computers in skips or stuff them in cupboards or give them away on places like freecycle (sometimes minus the fixed disk for security reasons but these are quite cheap to buy new). Companies often have loads of obsolete computer kit in cupboards because you have to pay for special disposal and often this is only 5-6 years old.
Even a 10 year old computer will run Linux and you can use this to learn about things like networking by following online guides. Thats how me and my mates learned about computers, not from going to uni.
My mate did all his training at home by himself with books – they all seem to have animals on them – penguins / lama’s etc – I havent a clue what they are – ( can find out if your keen) but he is TOTALLY self taught, at home with books, as previously was working in a pizza shop then a bookies taking shit from pissed up nasty clients! until he got into the industry (which did take a few years!) and then did the UBER exam (which he studied and studied for)
I must say mate – you really need to try and re-focus some of your negative energy in to at least ‘good enough’ – as it seems what ever anyone suggests isnt gonna ‘do it for you’
if you really want something this guy is a good inspiration = everything I’ve said about him is the truth, and he sweated it and came through the other side ….
the thing about this world is you need to just try ‘something different’ otherwise if you dont – your stuck in the same old shit – I know from personal experience!

rather hard to prove knowledge though when you use that approach at least with qualifications it shows I have been working hard. Need stuff that will stand up in interviews

I think the problem is I am just in a situation there’s no way back from really. Don’t have the motivation or the faith to just read books on stuff and expect that to get me anywhere. And chances are it wouldn’t anyway no idea how that would work at interview. “not worked in years but I have read a lot of IT books”.
I think the path is going to have to be take shitty job in a factory or something. Sounds crap

you can start off working for voluntary or community groups who need IT support, in return for them giving you a good reference on application forums. its not so much about just reading the books, you use them to build test systems with. not all companies, particularly smaller ones are obsessed with IT qualifications, they are only wanted for specialist jobs whereas most companies need someone who will do everything from desktops to telephone systems and even CCTV – which TBH if you know one end of a cable from the other and the basics needed to set up a PC to play games on is an easy job..

I think its an idea but fundamentally something more structured would be a better idea for someone in my situation. I dont have much faith in myself nor much idea of the direction I want to go. So something that teaches me these things but also gives me a qualification seems a more sensible route for me I think. But I cant afford that, so just getting on with some kind of job no matter how crappy it is seems like the best option at the moment. And you never know where that will lead so the optimistic side of me things perhaps something will come along.
what area ans what skills you got, that might be a syaty if you looking for help getting a job!!

a lot of office workers in smaller companies end up moving into the IT side as they can’t normally afford in house IT staff…

exactly the kind of thing I hope will develop over some time. Plus, hopefully, a year of working and being in the real world will give me the confidence to push harder for a more interesting job/educate myself. We shall see 🙂
