I know where extraslim lives as I once didn’t live too far away myself and it depends – private museums do have entry costs but the Council run ones can have free entry – but they are not that well funded. There used to be a fairly good one in Reading, I remember in the 90s they had (to demonstrate how sewage was dealt with before the advent of Thames Water) a excellent display of an old style loo what discharged directly into a cesspool, complete with a particularly fine and realistic stuffed rat looking up through the hole. That said it was one of the better exhibits, I think Thames Water and the Environment Agency had part funded it..
ohh okay. i think it’s the big ones that are free then, like natural history. and that sounds.. wonderful.. GL.. :S hahaha.

some of the local adult ed centres do good subsidies for people on benefits, so may be worth checking out? I loved my art class – the older folk were hillareous and so naughty and good humor’s! really miss the fact I cant go, am even looking to see if I could work late on thus when I finish my course so I can get back to it!
I totally agree about public transport from your neck of the woods to get into london, my mate comes from guildford and its extortionate just to get to waterloo!!what sort of voluntary work you interested in?
I used to help out in ‘holiday’ clubs for children with physical and mental learning difficulties when I was 13 to about 21, during the school holidays so the parents had some respite, absoultley loved it! the kids were brilliant and such fun, its prob all changed now what with crb checks etc, didnt have to do them when i started. I just turned up and started..
I will have a look but 2bh I am not massively interested in doing an art class or anything like that. Would like to learn skills that are useful but other than that. I really am no good at hobby’s and find social interaction stressful not fun generally.
I am not even sure I am really interested in volunteering it was more because it looks good on my CV. Have no desire to help other people in all honesty. But you dont seem to just turn up and start, applied to about 10 things only 1 even bothered to get back to me. That was helping out in the forest, making paths etc. But theres never any jobs in that kinda thing so whats the point.

Hey Extraslim,
Logically, we know with the economy as it is, you are not alone, but more importantly, you’re not alone to being without work, possibly due to mental illness. I’ve had “issues” since I was around 11, but it wasn’t until I fell in love, that it brought all my supressed issues into consciousness. Like you, I have a lot of mental issues to face.
The point is, no matter how much we involve ourselves in hedonism (as I’ve done :), using techniques to avoid said pain, change etc, it will always remain with us. It is something that is informing our consciousness of the need for change. Growing up, I used to naively believe in wish fulfillment…it doesn’t work. It TAKES actual physical, mental WORK. The things, people, ANYTHING that matters requires effort. Are you into science? It’s the same process. Energy equals matter-physical being. I promise you, from someone that has tried to rid herself… I have over the past five months, tried to face everything without excuses or buffers, and see it as a challenge, I have chosen to rise to it, and I’ve never felt better…in the long run. You need to be around someone who can see the long-term change, because day-to-day, we won’t be able to see it. It is happening and changing for the better. You can do it!
It’s only in the past five months that I have faced my issues, head on without crutches, and even achieving that in itself is a huge step, and I can’t tell you the pride and motion towards contentment I feel, for facing my issues without a buffer. We know that it will take a long time, and minute steps to achieve this fully, automatically. We have to train ourselves to think a certain way.
For example, I grew up listening to Rock music, which I adore, but in times of severe depression, I would seek the darker elements of life, like depressive, homogenous rock…does it help in the interim? Yes. Would it be better for me to seek refuge in music or anything vaguely celebratory, happy or positive in the long-term…yes!
There is meaning to seek the “light”. Are you into philosophy etc? You should read Conversations With God…it tells you that nothing is wrong in life. The item of most importance is to listen to your soul, and follow your inner most wishes. So, like me and you, if hedonism is our way of life, perhaps we can incorporate that into our lives in a progressive, functional way. Have you thought about DJing, or doing something similar? I want to do that too…I don’t feel that I can truely conform to the ideals society asks of me. I’m hopeful that positive things will come my way, even though I don’t feel it on a daily basis. Just say it. You won’t believe it for a long time. As the book suggests, the time frame between thinking something positive and it coming into fruition will become shorter, the more you think that you ARE valuable, the more it will feedback in your bio-system.
Believe me. I was and still am to some degree the most cautious, afraid, unrelaxed being you can come across. However in the past five months, thanks to this new belief system, I am gravitating towards “contentment”. So, we both have to actively make changes to our thought processes…if I don’t feel like exercising, what do I do? I strap on those weights and go walking, or play Softball. You can do it too. :))
Lastly, even with a belief, “bad” things will happen. It’s how we perceive said events. They’re not necessarily bad. They just are…
Jeez, I sound like a nut lol. I mean hugs…look to the light in everything in your life, because you are needed and meaningful. If you read this book, you’ll understand.
Lastly, I devoted my entire existence to other people, which is good, but neglecting myself is not. The self is important as another (discussed further in Conversations with God) So, view the voluntary work as helping yourself…and perhaps you’ll find that you get more from it than you thought. I’ve done a lot of voluntary work, and I’ve often found that I gained more than the recipients…
You’ll find that when you feel better about yourself, you’ll feel able to give more. The fact that so many relationships fail is because we forget about oursleves. We compromise ourseleves too much. So in voluntary work, you are just as important. I find that with unpaid work, there is more appreciation for your efforts and enjoyment, so please, give it a go!
If you need someone to talk to, I’m sure you can contact me via here (new, so not sure) We’re both in the same boat. You’ll get there. The fact that we’re both striving and not giving up, says a lot about our character. Remember that.
Best wishes…and apologies for not being as smart as I can be…on new medication that is causing drowsiness…doh!
Best wishes from someone who is going through the same beep!
sorry to invade your topic Extraslim , hope is not a problem if i join here instead of create a new one, if that seems to be not fair from my side i’ll just edit and open a new one
i want to move from norway to Uk in the near future , and i’m trying to check out about a job BEFORE moving because i’m not rich and i can’t stay for longtime in a new place without nothing doin’ but this seems to be really difficult , i’ve checked out the gumtree many times but still no way . i am a JCB operator ( 360 exc. and wheel loader ) with regular norwegian driving license for those machines , could somebody give me kind of a tip about what i shall do ? better maybe try to get in touch with building companies directly ? which areas in uk have the most construction going on right now ? is difficult to get a CPCS / CSCS card in uk ?
and may i ask you the right wording to put at the end of any CV ? it should be sth like ” i agree with the terms of the XYZ Law about Privacy etc etc ” , i didnt write down this on my CV and i guess that’s one of the reason why i didnt get any answer yet ( at leat i hope so … )
sorry for bothering you but i’m serious about this uk mission , hope to see you soon 🙂
thank you really much and good luck with your seek Extraslim , i see you are from Russia never thought about looking for a job outside your country ? i’m living in the northern part of Norway near to Russia and Finland borders and i see many people from these countries working here . kind regards
EDIT sorry i have read more of the topic , you’re not any longer in the Motherland i’m so dumb i should have understood it because you were talking about gumtrre too … i’m stupid
Most licences is just a paper away inside the eec…so that should not be a problem…most big construction jobs are now at company level…loads are not employed in the country they work…so look at companies that have big jobs in uk and apply there directly is my best tip
Hejhej thanks for you reply Sinner i didnt get what you mean with ” loads ” ?? my english sucks a bit
its a pity you didn’t do this two years ago as my employers just had loads of building work done.. in the East of England (just across the North Sea) they are always building stuff or they need people to dig places etc for farming/forestry
I think you only have to send your license certificate (perhaps with translation) to our regulators and then you get licensed..
I’ve not seen a CV with references to privacy laws on it from European workers. There are places which try and get Europeans work in UK but they seem to mostly have people from PL, LT, LV, CZ, SK, RO etc – but where I live it is very normal for people to come over from Scandinavia (they have been doing so for some centuries :laugh_at:)
thank you for your reply GL , i’ve been speaking with some english dudes last winter and they told me that there’s a lot of constructions going on in uk this year , i believe you if you tell me that was even more in the past , unfortunately i i didn’t have my license yet . i can actually do lot of more things in constructions as i have very good experience in painting and i know the basics of wood carpentry but what i really want to do is work with badass excavators !
I think you only have to send your license certificate (perhaps with translation) to our regulators and then you get licensed..
i did contact HSE ( is that ok as regulator ? ) asking if my license is valued in England , they answered ” a foreign competence certificate is normally not valued UNLESS is an official , national level certificate , in this case your employer can get the equivalent for you ” , i really hope these terms do fit in my case , as a driving license is pretty official and national-level isn’t it ? no much to translate on it , my name – date of birth – date of license attainment on the front , and a caption with all the machines international symbols on the back , where are marked the machines that i can actually drive
is very normal for people to come over from Scandinavia (they have been doing so for some centuries )
hahahahahahahhahaha nice one , no worries i’m not a viking i come from italy
