  • Only a couple hours to go! I’m off to work, hopefully see you lot all later lol! raaa

Does It not take 5 weeks to reach optimal temperature though… ?

Yeah it does. October 21 is when the real experiment starts. Ain’t out of the woods yet people! :laugh_at:

can it be used as a weapon! blast some protons at the commies WEEEEEEYYY

hopefully they will discover if string theory really works .. then we can explain exactly how every thing in the universe is built and have one set of laws that work for every thing as oppose to several conflicting sets of laws

    oh, wot a surprise… it didn’t kill us all…

did u see that scientist who suggested that anyone who was seriously worried, was a ‘twat’. :weee:

i think thats a technical, scientific term, ha ha! raaa

i wish scientists were prepared to use more robust language, as opposed to havin to seriously answer really stoopid questions, in a calm and authorative manner!

The media didn’t help really, proper doomsday shit lol! As well, all they did was turn the machine on and send particles round. Cern are to carry out the first high powered collisions on the 21st of October. Something could go wrong then for all we know. I know Cern have send nothing can go wrong but at the time people said that about the titanic didn’t they!

People who were worried about it are not stupid at all. What with all the negative press of course people were gonna be bloody worried! That scientist who labelled such people is a complete and utter cunt! :you_smart

m8 there are loads of collisions that happen in the earths atmosphere every day on a much much bigger scale exactly like the ones they are tring to reproduce ..

Yeah man i know there is. I ain’t worried about the LHC at all to be honest. I just don’t like the way people take the piss out of people who are worried about it. It’s only natural for people to be worried about new things but you don’t need someone calling them twats because of that fact! 😉

sounds a bit like my old car,
    it’s broken down

I agree that much of the mainstream media took the easy ‘doomsday’ headlines, as usual… which is a real waste of an opportunity to explain wot the LHC is supposed to be doin.

I find that people often get worked up about media ‘fluff’, without botherin to do one bit of background research. If u r careful about ur sources (!), the internet is a great place 4 finding out stuff, but many people don’t seem 2 bother.

i notice this is ur thread, so i understand u bein defensive, but ur background research appears 2 consist of readin some Nostradamus! 😉 sorry, thats not really fair, i can see u did some other background, but u do come over as worried!

the twat comment came from the radio times ask a scientist letters page, i saw (now thats a source! :laugh_at:) and using the mighty internet, i have chased up the comment, made by Prof Brian Cox of Manchester Uni. Check out this story, i think u can see why the man is annoyed! i think he’s got a fair point…

This whole issue doesn’t bother me anymore. Like you say i have done my research and am quite interested in the results these experiments will bring.

I’ll admit when i first heard about this, i was worried but mainly because of the sites i was viewing.
I still think that so much can go wrong but purely on an operational level. I mean it’s been shut down for two months because of mechanical failures, I think when it does actually fire up somethings gonna fuck up but not a doomsday scenario!

Btw have you heard the LHC rap? Quite funny!

not heard the rap, but i have read the whole thread now, ie done the background! 😉 i understand where ur comin from a bit better now..

i’m not really into physics (i had an awful teacher!), so i can’t really argue the toss anyway, but i have a bee in my bonnet since a mate said ‘u keep going on about global warming, but we’ll all be dead next week!’, probly jus 2 wind me up…

it took me days to work out (roughly) wot the LHC woz about cos of the ‘doomsday’ aspect. it would help if i wasnt forced to listen to BBC 5live all day, at work. :hopeless:

it drives me nuts when people r surrounded by the fruits of scientific thought, like PV (), but then try 2 suggest that science is like a religion.

If it was a religion, we’d still be burnin witches, or at least subjecting witches to particle’s accelerated to 99% of the speed of light! :laugh_at:

Science may not be perfect, but it is easily the most powerful (and dangerous) tool we have… and the media can’t be arsed to report it properly, which is just madness!
