Massive blurb below, so if all that is too much for you here’s the important bits, It’s The Poke’s 1st Birthday, it’s one of our best lineups ever, it’s going to be an incredible night of acid, electro, techno, dubstep, electronica and lord knows what else.
Those with stamina read on…
Having played host to everyone from Venetian Snares to 808 State, Ellen Allien to Mark Pritchard, The Poke has now reached the grand old age of 1 (equivalent to pensionable status in human years). To celebrate this milestone we’ve invited back some of our favourite DJs from the last twelve months to party hard with us under the arches.
First among equals on the night we have Luke Vibert, one of the only artists around who can claim to have released albums on pretty much all of the most essential leftfield labels of the past ten years, Warp, Ninja Tune, Rephlex, Planet Mu, Lo have been just some of the people to have benefitted from the Cornish wonder’s touch.
Snapping at his heels we have Planet-Mu boss and electronica legend Mike Paradinas, who since his early releases on Rephlex has been one of the true pioneering spirits of the scene, whether as a producer or nurturing the next wave of talent via his acclaimed Planet-Mu label.
Mike Dred, needs no introduction, the godfather of UK acid, his releases for R&S and Rephlex, under a variety of pseudonyms provided the squelchy heartbeat to a generations late night shenanigans, he also holds the dubious honour of releasing one of my favourite ever records, his 98k gold ep on Rephlex.
Ed DMX, aka DMX Krew is one of the leading figures in the electro scene long before it became a bandwagon everyone wanted to attach themselves to and one of the best DJs we’ve ever had the privilege to play alongside, Ed has been a regular fixture at our parties for the last four years, with good reason, he’s really that good.
Another regular over the last few years has been the man machine Cylob, and for equally good measure, with tracks such as ‘Rewind’ and ‘Living in the 1980s’, Cylob, injected a much needed dose of fun into an often too serious scene, with DJ sets that skip with abandon between electro funk, boshing techno, classic house and pop, he always brings that something extra to the table that makes him an essential ingredient to the best parties.
DJ Rephlex Records is not Aphex Twin, despite breathless specualtion on internet chatrooms, but he is one of the best DJs we’ve put on, which is what really matters.
Qwerty is a Croatian DJ who has recently relocated to London, after coming into our shop clutching two of the best mix CDs we’ve ever heard, we had to hook him up with some gigs, he played at last month’s Poke and just as we thought blew us away, so we had to give him another bash.
And finally we have me, John Power, and no i was never in Cast or the La’s, just to try and finally clear that up, having held residencies at half the clubs in London from Turnmills to the 333, i have given up any form of social life for the last twelve months pushing The Poke and opening Poke Records in Soho.
