  • Leeds Refuse Collectors are on their 3rd strike now into 10 days, because of failed talks between the 3 unions Unite/GMB/Unison and Leeds City Council, run by a Tory/Lib Dem coalition.

Basically the Council wants to cut pay by upto £6000 by 2011. The reason for this is “equality” – to create equal pay for men and women. However instead of increasing womens pay, they are cutting mens pay, from £18,000 to £13,000 on average. Unions support equal pay for both genders, however not by reducing existing pay, instead increasing womens pay.

Basically, being Yorkshire there is a lot of solidarity with the strikers. It’s getting a bit heated:

Rubbish dumped at Council leader’s home

‘Threatening’ call over bin strike dispute

    Bin pickets ‘intimidating staff’

It’s all a bit 1979, no? Looks like we’re doing a circle back to complete communication failure between workers and management. This, the Royal Mail strikes, the Vestas strikes… I agree with all these strikes though. They all have legitimate reasons to be doing so. And as with the Leeds bin strike, talks were tried but often broke down because of lack of compromise from the management.

they just shouldnt be allowed to do this,
reducing an already not great wage and palming it off as equality is horse shit, its a money saving idea someone dreamed up!
equality and equal pay should be a no brainer! they should have no rights to do this and just bring womens pay inline with mens – end of!

6 grand is a lot of money

what did they expect everyone to go down easy with it?

    fuckern idiots

this is a standard centre right tactic to discourage “politically correct” initiatives by turning them into something negative, claiming a counter argument that it will cost more or using it as a cost saving ploy…

Vestas strike did have another angle, to be fair the Danish boss explained why they wanted to close the factory and it was the normal people of Britain causing those jobs to be lost because they keep fucking complaining about wind turbines as they refuse to put them “in their back yard”

But I had to ride into a massive headwind today from the North sea (so much so that I had to put full throttle on the e-bike otherwise I wasn’t getting anywhere – about 10 miles away from me and josh and damo (just outside Fram) there is a place what would be perfect for wind turbines but all the locals complain…yet they are happy to see Sizewell C and D built :you_crazy

its because the projects for UK wind turbines get so delayed from people exercising their “individual rights” why companies like Vestas have to close down (although I do think the factory should be used for something else like making transformers or bits for plyons)

pay cuts like that are out of order, but £18k for a totally unskilled job is overpaid

i pay graduates with high level interpersonal skills and plenty of relevant experience to manage projects about that and i haven’t lost a single member of staff in over 3 years

I lived through the 70s “winter of discontent” and although I was just a small boy then I was aware enough to know “something was going on”, and already interested in technology, particularly broadcasting and telecommunications.

All I remember was that the power went out about 3 times for a couple of hours, and the telly didn’t show any programmes for a few weeks as the TV company technicians were on strike – and sometimes live shows didn’t get put on because the Post Office Telecommunications engineers (who at that point controlled the comms links between TV companies and the Tower) were on strike.

However I did not starve, services such as gas and water stayed on and standard civillian telephone and postal services were no worse than normal in the 1970s..

the nature of the work counts for a lot. Unskilled workers get paid over 20K at our place as the work is demanding and we need to retain committed staff.

I also bumped into to an ex-employee the other day who had taken a job as a refuse collector. She was unable to stop as she was legging it after the refuse truck to keep up. She stank as well

I’m not saying that i agree with this at all, but the workers are lucky that we aren’t like china in the pay respect for this reason:

In china, if a factory worker asks for a pay rise, they are usually sacked, there are plenty more workers who dont want a raise willing to take the job.

That’s why they are lucky, however, Decreasing an already not good wage to a lower one to meet “equality”, is pathetic. I’m quite sure the women actually wanted more pay AND have the same pay as men, rather than have the same pay as men, but men get a paycut of £5000 on average.

luckily our letting agents have employed so freelance pikeys to come and collect out rubbish, otherwise our yard would be full of shit. TBH its gonna be a bit of a shit one being a bin man anyway and they pay cuts their suggesting are a little bit extreme.

I dont understand why employers continue to do shit like this and then their actually surprised when theres a strike haha, its as if they thought that the people would be happy they were getting 6k less a year lmfao. fucking idiots raaaraaaraaa
