Right im in a bit of shit at the moment. Me an a few mates got caught in one of the abandoned blocks on our campus. We gained entry by rattling a window that was slightly off the catch. went in caused no damage but found an old room with stuff strewn across the floor. took a jacket an other items that we found on the floor for a laugh. then as we were leaving we were found by the warden and as it turns out the room we had found was being used for storage by him. So far the police said its in the hands of the uni. but im ure that the guy will want to press charges. any help on this issue would be good, cause it looks like im facing some form of charge.
finding something and picking it up and not handing it in is theft in the eyes of the law
you could check out if the uni knew he was using it as storage? is the stuff actually his, or has he been collecting stuff students have left behind on the quiet?
or just write him a friendly letter of apology, explain you thought it was abandoned, wouldn’t have picked it up if you thought it would be missed and offer to buy him a few beers as a gesture of goodwill
Did you return the jacket an other items to the warden?
If so then there has been no serious offence of theft as you did not permanently deprive the owner (uni authorities) of the property (edit: It may still be a theft charge but a far lesser one)
And as no tools were used to enter the building there is no aggravated trespass or burglary…
plus when challenged you all presumably realised what you had did was wrong
and if you are posting here I then I exect the heddlu didn’t detain your group for very long as its hardly a major crime
The most that could happen would a minor criminal damage offence but even so it would be absolutely fucking daft for the Uni to press charges – why lumber one of their own students with a criminal record (however minor) for such a trivial offence?
TBH I reckon the worst you would get is a minor bollocking from your tutor RA or whatever they are called.
There is also a long-standing culture of urban exploration amongst University students worldwide, particularly science students…
What globaloon says is a good idea (might be worth making sure your tutor also sees the letter if they have got involved) and If they start taking it any further I would go and see your NUS representatives as IMO that would be wholly disproportionate.
yeh, it was his an the uni knew he was storing there. the plan so far is a letter of apology, an we will see how it goes from there.
An apology letter is a good idea. A bit of genuine remorse goes a long way to making people less angry. Maybe an offer to help him out with some chores as a form of restitution? [probably only an idea if he is sound]
Speak to your Director of Studies or what passes for one and see if he/she has any other suggestions too.
Get the letter and seeing your Director of Studies done asap – will look better than leaving it too long.
Good luck mate :group_hug
Yep the letters all being sorted now and is going through the right channels. but after trying to apologise face to face and having him tell me to fuck off and that im not sorry for him only sorry i got caught etc. The guy is a total c**t in general anyway.
High spirited student pranks, they aren’t gonna press charges for that. It would make the Uni look bad
Sounds like the geezer is in the wrong job, its a students privilige to get into minor scrapes an stuff, nice work, Raverbaby, i’m proud of you. Bet your mates are secretly jealous, cos they aren’t ‘bad’ enuff…
lol, yeh it was all in good humor, i rekon they are just gonna try an scare us a bit an that will be that.
there is talk of public flogging coming back or was it hanging………….
id write the letter saying it was a stupopid prank no harm was mreant and you wioll pay for any dammage done and wont do it again
