  • Hi, my name is Sophie and I am a final year university student and currently doing a dissertation on legal highs.

My project is looking at the prevalence of novel psychoactive substances (legal highs) and to gain insight into the safety users perceive they have.

I am doing a pilot survey aimed at users of legal highs.

The privacy of the members will remain intact as I will be using the responses as statistics not naming people, it will be anonymous.

    Thank you for your time!
(p.s the survey questions will be posted below)

    Pilot Survey Questions:

    1. Are you a user of legal highs?

    2. How often do you use these substances?

    3. Where do you usually get the drugs from?

    4. Which drugs do you usually take?

    5. What do you know about the safety of the drugs you use?

Please post responses in this thread and then all data will be anonymous if used! 🙂 Thanks

Alternatively, if you don’t want to answer on this forum, the survey is available at the link below where it is totally anonymous, no names etc.

Please help if you can 🙂

Novel Psychoactive Substances aka ‘Legal Highs’ Survey

    1. Are you a user of legal highs?

    Yes

    2. How often do you use these substances?

Varies, if i can get the proper stuff like MDMA & Weed then I dont use legals at all, if I cant get the good stuff for a while ( weeks or months ) then I try legals/RCs……… both are sporadic use only, special occasions, big nights out etc

    3. Where do you usually get the drugs from?

    Interweb

    4. Which drugs do you usually take?

MDMA, Drone & weed when I can get them, legals/RCs vary, tried several since Drone was banned and none have been worth repeating

    5. What do you know about the safety of the drugs you use?

They are NOT safe…….. illegals are safer

If you want a proper survey ask about negative effects and prices of RCs/Legals compared to illegals ( and include alcohol & tobacco in the legals ), illegals are cheaper, safer as doses & effects well known and documented over many years, and far better………….. I doubt anyone would touch these dodgy chems if the good stuff was legal

    1. Are you a user of legal highs?
    Yes
    2. How often do you use these substances?
    Not very often at all
    3. Where do you usually get the drugs from?
The shop – after all alcohol and tobacco are legal, right? 😉

    4. Which drugs do you usually take?
MDMA, Magic Mushrooms (when in season), Cannabis
    5. What do you know about the safety of the drugs you use?
For the legal ones – destructive and disgusting, more damaging than the illegal ones I use.

    Just a thought…

Asking people to post their answers in a thread on a public forum is hardly an anonymous survey and surely undermines your research a bit?

Even ignoring the fact that police/families/employers can and do visit the forum, a lot of us know each other by name and in real life, and although most people here are pretty candid about their drug use, the answers people give in front of their friends/peers might be different from those that they would otherwise give if they could answer privately. E.g. someone might not like to admit that they cane 5g of mephedrone a day in front of the whole forum for fear of looking like a ‘dirty addict’, but they might be more honest about their drug use if the survey was done by some other means, say using surveymonkey?

Hope that doesn’t come across as too sarky, I’m just saying this as I had to do research projects when I was at university and learn how to avoid introducing bias into results. If I’d gone about conducting a survey in this manner I would have been severely marked down for it.

Thanks for all your replies, I do have a survey on surveymonkey, and have tried posting the link on here however it needs to be approved by the admin people, if the responses come via the surveymonkey they will be anonymous. I understand your point though totally, this is just the pilot study for now too.

Also, for Question 4 “Which drugs do you usually take?” I am referring to legal highs as opposed to illegal drugs, same goes for question 5.

Thanks Mezz, will take this into account when I make the full survey, this is just a pilot one! great help though thanks!

On a slightly more cynical note, we do get a lot of unsavoury types, like journalists and television researchers, who use this site to find information to support their half-arsed and biased anti-drug/rave propaganda. I’m not for a minute suggesting that you are one, but people are naturally wary of anyone who comes on here asking for info as they don’t know for sure if they are a genuine research student or some tabloid hack sniffing around for the latest sensationalist story. For this reason, dissertation surveys sometimes get a bit of a hostile response.

I guess your surveymonkey survey has more info on it, but personally I wouldn’t take part in this kind of research until I knew a few more details, like: your university/course, the name of the professor co-ordinating the project, and a copy of your university’s policy on ethics in surveys (though I probably wouldn’t read it tbh!). These things tend to identify the bogus types who are just fishing for information.

Absolutely, I totally understand. I am from the University of Lincoln and my dissertation supervisor is Dr. Mark Baron – the course I’m doing is Forensic Science. My dissertation is basically on the use and perception people have about legal highs. Dr. Baron has done research papers into the content of legal highs previously and he wants me to gather views using surveys etc. I have tried posting my surveymonkey link but it said it needed to be approved before it will be posted so hopefully that will get done soon 🙂 any idea how long that takes?

If you go to the surveymonkey site and and /s/G555KQC to the address bar this will lead to my survey – providing anonymous responses! Thanks 🙂

hey, i can see your survey at monkey, but was wondering what you hope to learn from these 5 questions?… as your only categorisation is legality. legal highs can be any kind of drug so it seems a bit strange to ask ‘how often do u use them?’, as the types of drug they are may be unrelated. its a bit like asking how often you eat sushi, mince pies, biriani or tapas

It is only a pilot study so only need about 20-25 responses for me to make a full detailed survey afterwards. I just want to see what legal highs people tend to use and what they know about the safety of them etc.

As regards the safety aspect of them, because they’re all extremely new, I think very little would be known about that side of it and in taking them, people are acting as guinea pigs. Also, because they carry the word ‘legal’ in their collective name, this seems to make some people think they are completely safe and binge on them for days and days, sometimes with very unpleasant consequences.

Exactly this – this is why i’m of the opinion that many illegals are safer, as we atleast know the consequences of taking them and how to reduce the chances of bad things happening (e,g MDMA don’t get dehydrated but don’t drink to much) where as with the majority of legals, if you OD there is very little that can be done to help you as medical practicioners (sp?) won’t know how to treat you.
