what is unusual is that for many years after the Chinese takeover Lenovo was one of the companies which didn’t bother with this.
Anyone who buys a Thinkpad laptop isn’t usually after “bleeding edge tech” – the design of them is much the same as it was in the late 1990s :laugh_at: – (at least not quite as bulky and heavy as they once were).
it doesn’t even make sense for them to do this; unless the reality is (and it might well be) “Western” users expectations of privacy are unimportant to them and the bulk of their new equipment is sold to countries where no one really expects privacy online or they are the feds/spies…
Thinkpads are also often used as standalone portable terminals to various bits of industrial and military equipment often running custom operating systems and/or behind secure firewalls
