Carbona (carbon tetrachloride) really was nasty shit (even if it was also a useful industrial solvent) and should have been restricted in the 1970s. Attacks the liver, suspected carcinogen and also destroys the ozone layer. and if you light up a cigarette when its vapour is around it turns into highly toxic phosgene (which some people learned the hard way, as these halogenated solvents were once favoured over benzine, naptha etc because they didn’t catch fire so easily).

For most uses it got replaced by 1-1-1 tricholorethane (which does have some narcotic effect if inhaled), that was still available as Tippex thinner (or as bulk solvent) well into the 1980s, though I think its restricted now because of the risk of ozone layer damage.

strangely enough I’ve literally just this moment been cleaning the remains of a sticky label from a small plastic bottle using some stuff caled “Pro-Power Degreaser”. It doesn’t say exactly whats in it but “contains hydrocarbons, C7-C8, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics” – which probably means all the various isomers of C7-C8 (there are a lot, illiesse might know more about them), plus warnings in most of Europes languages ” do not breathe in the fumes, can cause drowsiness and dizinesss”- and was thinking “its almost as good as the old stuff” :laugh_at:

(TBH 1980s era halogenated solvents would be less useful here as they would likely dissolve the plastic as well..)

there used to be more xylene in it, nowadays it is more just C7-C8 (heptane and octane). Anything higher in carbon atoms would start becoming too oily and lower would evaporate too quickly/go up on fire (and is also more valuable as petrol/gasoline). Xylene is still available here as paint thinners but bloody expensive these days compared to a few years ago..
