It’s official we’re the 5th maddest bastards on the internet according to google…
google loves us. i was trying to find a printers or summat the other day and got taken to a thread of mine about printing on this site! felt like i was looking at the back of my own head, if you know what i mean.
how does google decide whats important?
and why were you searching for mad bastards? are we not mad enough for you any more? :hopeless: 🙁 :omg:
PS: why does pv come up in that weird format from the google link?
if you scroll down the page near the bottom you can find a drop-down menu (with vBulletin in it)… the link is to a page that is in text only format
you can also click view full version
Now theres a can of worms!…without getting ultra technical,Google does what the fuck it likes.
Essentially Google compiles its rankings from how many times a site is linked to from other sites..the more links a site has to it,the higher it appears in Googles rankings. However, this leaves the Google ranking open to manipulation, see google bombing for more info on that sort of thing.Google constantly re-jiggers their logic to try to counteract this, which further skews search results.
Google also do some other well dodgy stuff, like the Autolink thing in their new toolbar, which lets them overwrite the page the user sees and put up links to what they want to put up.
Then theres the saga of Gmail,Googles email service,Gmail knows your email content, attachment content, search results, scans emails and puts what it feels are relevent ads in beside the actual mails. Its also lowering the expectation of privacy in email generally.
Argueably,Google have also altered the web for the benefit of certain organisations, they have also, argueably, removed content from their Image Search…therefore it could be said that Serge Brin,Googles founder and owner, decides what YOU see on the web
But,they’re the only game in town for some things. For sites who haven’t been gored by some of the filtering, they tend to be far and away the largest traffic source,(i strongly suspect that Google directs more traffic to this site than all other search engines put together…by a long way) and for context sensitive advertising revenue, they have the only viable solution today .
Personally,i wont use Google unless i have to(Yahoo and Teoma have excellent search engines),and i have even went to the length of bookmarking a Google Search page that makes the info i search for far less useful to their records
