  • DOES MARIJUANA LEAD 2 HARDER DRUG USE?

no, alcohol, tobacco, and most of all having a peer group which tolerates hedonistic lifestyles and the anger/energy to disregard those who think otherwise (even if they are close to you like family or in positions of authority) is the only real “gateway”

it doesnt make you want to do harder drugs per se, but because of the law, in order to get ganja you have to ascociate with criminals, who may also sell other drugs which then become available. but this is purely the effect the stupid laws have on the user, and nothing to do with the plant itself.

TOTAL AGREE GL….ASIDE FROM THE POINT THAT 97% OF PEOPLE WHO USE CANNABIS NEVER GO ONTO USE ANY OTHER ILLEGAL DRUG..MARIJUANA DOESN CAUSE THE USE OF OTHER DRUGS BUT INSTEAD INDICATES THAT THE SAME FACTORS THAT MAKE PEOPLE TRY CANNABIS ALSO MAKE THEM LIKELY TO TRY OTHER SUBSTANCES..ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS SUCH AS WEALTH OR POVERTY AND NEIGHBOURHOOD CHARACTERISTICS WOULD PLAY MUCH LARGER ROLES IN DETERMING THE TYPE OF DRUGS PEOPLE ARE LIKELY TO USE, THAN WHICH DRUG THEY USED 1ST…BECAUSE MARIJUANA IS ILLEGAL AND CANT BE BROUGHT AT A SHOP LIKE ALCOHOL, BACKY,PEOPLE HAVE TO SEEK UNDERGROUND DEALERS,WHO WILL THEN,OFTEN BECOME THE SOURSE FOR ILLICIT DRUGS..THE GATEWAY ISNT MARIJUANA ITS THE LAWS THAT PUT CANNABIS INTO THE SAME CRIMINAL FRAMEWORK AS CLASS A’S……

I agree that the prohibitionist laws are definitely part of the gateway and are counter-productive….

but I also think the decision to take any drug its an individual decision about self control (or lack thereof) and circumstances – if you want to do something badly enough laws won’t stop you.

I’ve done the entire spectrum of drugs at one time or another, including some of the nastier/addictive class “A” drugs, but the “worse” ones didn’t appeal to me because I saw what happened to some of my friends – not because I was worried about the rest of society.

yes being nicked and/or the risk of Court/prison did worry me but only because its hassle and boring, not because I thought what I did was wrong…

There was recently a post here pointing out that there was loads of drugs in Malaysia, a country with the death penalty for some drug offences. That – if anything – shows how ineffective laws are are at reducing demand….

this was on a local news site….

Colchester: Dangers of drugs abuse set out
    By Louise Sassoon

Thousands of 11-year-olds are to be told the dangers of drink and drug abuse in a campaign highlighting the pitfalls of substance misuse.

A total of 15,000 schoolchildren from across the county, including hundreds from Colchester, will take part in the roadshow over the next few months.

It comes as levels of binge drinking in the county are said to be soaring – raising fears Essex could soon be home to a generation of hard drug users.

Welfare officers hope the multiagency show will put off youngsters from experimenting with drink and drugs altogether.

PC Victoria Wilson, substance misuse co-ordinator for Essex Police, said: “Alcohol and tobacco have been shown to be the key substances which can lead on harder drugs.

“Statistics show that if a young person starts off on these then they are more likely to get into cannabis and harder drugs.”

I think that society leads u on to harder drugs, by being so in adequete (im not sure weather i agree with myself) ill put it down anyway

Drugs reached 11 year olds many years ago – they need to start younger than that :noway:

I was counselling parents of 11 year olds who were dabbling in drugs ten years ago….

    makes perfect sense…..

when I lived in your part of the country I was working for years in a boring insurance company then for a few years in a high tech company with electronics/computers….

    then I was a civil servant for 4 years….

in all these jobs for many colleagues (ranging from office juniors to senior management) all took some form of recreational substance – of course not everyone took illegal drugs but many either drank or smoked and it was a highlight of the day….

its not that the jobs were particularly strenuous and the pay rates in SE England were quite good; but lots of people were/are fundamentally dissatisfied with their lives…

a glass of Scotch, a spliff or even a few pills or a few lines is one way of snatching back a bit of artificial happiness for a few hours and that is as good as life gets for a lot of people….

it isnt the drug that promotes further drug use i believe it is the culture surrounding cannabis, like a link in a chain one way or another i believe cannabis did lead me onto other drugs

i dont think the drug itself is a gateway drug. however the type of people to smoke weed are often more adventurous, more curious or more questioning of what they are told. so for some people they have been told weed is bad and it has been demonised along with other drugs, and once they learn it is not actually that bad, certainly not as dangerous as alcohol, they start questioning exactly how dangerous other drugs are, such as ecstasy.

although many people i know who smoke weed dont touch anything else. the most used drugs would have to be weed and ecstasy through people i know.

other than alc and tobaco i started out on Mary and i now do a wide and colourful range of mind bending syrums 😛 so if it didnt for you then fair play but for me it was the thing that started me thinkign about how powerful the mind is and being attracted to altered states of perception.

    peace n love

Nicotine is the gateway drug … lots of people who use hard drugs use Cannabis but even more use Nicotine.

I’m of the opinion of learnt behaviour ~ whatever the substance

I grew up seeing all the adults around me drinking alcohol when celebrating, pissed off, fed up, angry, to forget etc etc started drinking at a very young age

later seeing all the adults smoking spliff, relaxing and having fun, and forgetting all their shit going on ~ in young eyes this seemed to work

later so called ‘harder’ drugs, and the law, lack of money etc never got in the way

The only thing that made me rethink with some of the ‘harder drugs’was seeing friends whoring themselves for speed and gear etc and not wanting to go down that alley
    (literally)

but I still reach for a beer when I’m fucked off and sometimes have to stop and think why I’m doing it and then put it back in the fridge and do something else to calm myself down with out substances
