wouldnt’ surprise me if these originated in SE Asia and are the reason why the stuff is still popular in these nations years after independence (they have a habit of retaining the useful bits of the Empire and making better use of them) 😉

a lot of what went on in the Empire wasn’t too nice either, but people in that part of the world have made the best of it…

I was surprised at how many SE Asian recipes the stuff turned up in, and this is in countries where you can get all the exotic spices you wish…
