  • anyone got reccomendations on decent brands? I don’t want a really flash one or a “bling” brand like an Ipod, I just want one with about 512MB of storage.

Are the Chinese ones that you see in different cases sold in computer shops but that all seem to have the same user interface pretty much all the same?

    I have one of these…

…but the 1G version with FM Tuner. Brilliant player, looks cool, is small, robust and reliable.
Also with Sony’s ATRAC format you can compress music to approx 1/3 of it’s size at 128kbs MP3, with (allegedly) no loss in quality. So on my 1G player I can get 30 hours of music roughly.
The software is hugely unpopular though, and many people report problems with it. Personally it’s worked fine for me, but it sounds like I’m in a minority (although the people with no complaint are never as loud as those that do, if you know what I mean?).
    Also available in blue…

Before that I had one of the others you mention, but didn’t find it very reliable. The Sony was worth the money for me.

Just bought a Sony NW-E105 with 512MB of storage. Excellent quality and only cost £30 at Sainsburys. Top purchase.

got a Logik Orbit 1G about 2 months ago for £30 (first MP3 ive had but) its excelent, small and i haven’t managed to trash it yet and i can get about 25 albums on it.Dont know much about them but i reckon its great value for money :bounce_g:

Well, you’ve seen my Sony GL, it’s aight, but I can only load tunes on using the Sony only software, and can only get the tunes off via PC using the same software. :annoyed::rant::evil:

    Rather annoying tbh.

    Try ebuyer

uses SD memory cards – so you can buy as many as you want of whatever size you want …..

TBH the software puts me off the Sony kit; and I don’t like ATRAC all that much – I know what it sounds like as its the MiniDisc protocol and I worked in broadcast for a few years when MiniDisc was becoming the main portable audio storage format. I find Sony’s corporate ethos quite arrogant TBH; you are forced to do things their way, yet the products are often far from perfect

Thanks for the tips – might go for the Logic Orbit (or similar) or the SD card device… (especially if that has audio line in recording!)

All the other MP3 players appear to be a generic Chinese design (for the electronics etc,) but they have different physical appearances. I have used them before and they seem OK.

I just want something you plug in at the USB connection, dump the files on to and then can take away and listen too – I spend too much of my life making computers work to want to have to go through some nightmare software every time I want to listen to music 😉

The Sonic software is a pain in the arse to contend with but the excellent sound quality makes up for it IMO.

I got a little Medion one for carting about,1 gig 35 quid no stupid software just plug it in the usb port and drag some files on there.no line in but it has a built in mic

yep its looking like one of the Chinese generic ones for me.

MP3 is a sub-optimal solution anyway for audio storage.

My idea of excellent audio would still be 0.25″ tape on a Revox B77 operating at at least 7.5ips tape speed but thats not exactly portable audio, and a Nagra or UHER is out of my price range and a rather bulky to cart around all the time 😉

I expect Sony may have put more effort into the audio circuitry but not only does the software let them down; there’s also the wider issues of DRM and rootkits, exploding batteries etc… I don’t like giving money to unrepentant corporate bullies – and I’ve also had previous hardware and software problems with Sony kit.

The generic chinese ones will only play mp3s which is really annoying, especially when you realise that some`of your music stored as .ogg or .wma. Which you never do til you get out the house and nothing on it will play.

TBH about 99% of all the music I have is MP3 format…and some of the newer ones do support other formats.. (its only going to be a firmware revision anyway)…

would be interested in one that played oggs if anyone knows of one :groucho:

Ive got an Archos Mp3 player. I rate them, no DRM (like ipods etc…).

ebay have some good deals on second hand ones.
