In the UK, bonne mamman from any supermarket are PERFECT. Look for the red and white checkered tops, but the same company also white label for tescos etc, so tescos finest range might be cheaper. You need a jar that flares straight, no lip going in (if using cakes, not grain, then just use anything, like lloyd grossman or and sauce jar)

The jar should look like this:

then empty the jam (I bake sponges and give them away, or give them to church/charity sales, but you can just bin it or eat it)

then with the lid, drill a hole in the middle about the size of your little finger, then using a hammer and nail knock 2/3/4 holes equidistant around the rim, like this:

A home made (very easy) or brought (rip off) 10 ml syringe can do 10 jars easily with two jab holes in them.

The jam is the most expensive part of it (except maybe a pressure cooker but check charity shops or ebay before hitting argos.), but is only done once. You’ll be moving on to bulk grows on grain in no time, although 10 jars knocks out a serious chunk of fungus, a year’s personal use for most. But moving on to grain and coir is way cheaper (not that jars are expensive, maybe 60p a jar?) and keeps a myc supply ready to fruit in a fortnight’s notice

Then just some micropore tape from a chemist, then verm and organic brf mate. Oh, some swabs too, you only need a handful but they come by the shit load, I’ll send a few over to you if you need, and a barrel and needle if you need. Don’t bother with a gas burner etc, swabs are safer.

Good luck bro, you’ll fail and get contams, we all do, so take it slow, stay clean (make you own still air box for a fiver, and fruiting chamber the same)

For home grows I also made an incubator for them using a cool box, a thermostat and a reptile heat mat, but you don’t need this, just toying around with ideas.

the very very simple(i.e. this won’t work) guide is:

you make up a substrate that mushrooms mycelium can grown on. This mostly consists of rice flour (nutritious) and vermiculite (pads it out, holds moisture) and water. You mix these together into a paste, it’s fun. Put it in jars prepared as above. bacteria are really cool at growing, mycelium a bit shit, so sterilise everything and stay sterile at every point. You use a pressure cooker to sterile your substrate jars with hot steam for a while, kill everything in there. Inject sterile mushrooms spores into it using a clean syringe in a glove box you make. After a couple of days you see the myc growing. It spreads through it. The mycelium is the ‘plant’, like an apple tree. Mushrooms juts fruit, like apples.

At his point you have a solid white block of myc, so open the jar and tip out (thats the the jar HAS to to be shaped like those above). Soak in cold water for 24 hours to get as much water in there as possible, then put in a fruiting chamber, which is just a box with lots of holes drilled and some perlite laid down that’s been soaked. Mist it every day

Couple of weeks later, shit loads of shrooms just grow. It’s cost you pennies, and the most amazing drug on the planet, powerful, insightful, no harm, anti-addictive just grow read And I really mean shit loads, I’ll load a pic in a mo.

BUT – this is so simplified, in reality you’ll need to learn a load about mushrooms, suffer loads of failures, learn chemistry and biology and mycology, and will become obsessed.

but it really is that simple when you know how to do it. Like anything else, people love to show how clever they are rather than just spread some love and knowledge. And make money.

Shrooms are like nothing else on this planet. I know the guys who love their aya (I grow it too) and cactus (I grow that) but honestly, when it comes to pure amazement, growing and taking your own mushrooms is as good as it gets. Just not a party drug. So much better.

Those are a self bred cube actually, but no-one has ever been sick from any of my mushrooms, not ever. I don;t know why guys do get sick, bt the number of guys who ask for immodium and pepto before they take them, don’t need it then just come back and back for more is crazy. I reckon is might have more do do with how they are grown, and whether you;re really getting what you’re paying/asking for than anything else. Suppliers can be unethical arseholes, but drug dealers are drug dealers on the whole I guess.
