so who here is actually in the know about mushroom picking? what about a pv mushroom hunt? 🙂
I’m going with a few friends soon, possibly on the weekend if its rained n shit. My mate graham knows a field by us, its produced HEALTHY harvests constantly for years and years. Yet nobody seems to know about it apart from us ‘delinquents’ lol
It is remarkable how the vast majority of the population cannot detect the mushrooms growing around them.
Even in urban areas!
Did notice a couple patches in August, but left them alone as don’t feel need to trip this year…
… for such small items, they have a pretty impressive impact.
Good luck on your quests if you do feel the appettite… and best wishes for dealing with psychological effects. Can take years to get integrated again, although UK mushrooms are relatively gentle compared to chemical powders.
so is it wait till it rains then all round to gaz’s?
where is the interest here?… the time is nigh!… also its blackberry time ! … i can get them on my own tho lol
my mates get them every year, apparently theres a fair few places round me. ive heard that fields with cow shit in are good for mushys?!? but hey, could be bullshit 😉
personally never liked tripping, and having to eat the shrooms made me feel physically sick…..
each to their own though!
I want to go shroom picking, I bet rouund where I live is a haven for shrooms but I am too scared about picking a poisonous one and slowly dying whilst my mates just think i’m tripping!
I might go look for a few and maybe take some photos and leave them on here so someone might be able to identify them.
WARNING : I am a computer/electronics engineer, not a mycologist / botanist and fairly crap at identifying plants compared to some of my hippy mates and mushrooms actually creep me out a bit (I will still eat the champignons and magic ones when they are processed).
so those what know more are welcome to clarify things –
but I have a feeling that there is some confusion caused by the predominance of USA based info sources. In the USA and other foreign countries there is a psylocibin mushroom, which can be misidentifed for a deadly poisionous amanita species). In Europe, this kind of magic mushroom does not normally grow wild. Misidentifications are more likely to land you with the unpleasantness and embarrasment of a badly upset tummy, perhaps in a remote area far from any appropriate loo, but not a fatality.
it is more often the middle class yoghurt weavers what poison themselves by misidentifying edible and deadly species after watching low budget cookery shows on the idiot lantern, not bothering with their research and thinking they can save themselves a couple of quid compared to going to waitrose.

I’ve also heard (that in the line underneath where the electricity pylons are (the big ones for the Grid, not smaller UK Power Networks ones) you get more shrooms. This might be partly because the area is often left more wild but also some electric leaks away you can hear it if you stand below the wires, so it must do something to nature). There are also small currents of electricity in the earth below. The folk what told me this are very brainy no nonsense Scottish people who tend to know this sort of random stuff.
When you do find your shrooms, make sure your friends avoid the obvious exclusion zone bits of the leccy infrastructure. I know you are smart enough to treat leccy with respect but some young people in rural areas aren’t, or think the pic of the stick man being knocked flat by a lightning bolt doesn’t apply to them. its not smart to try and climb the pylon even if the view looks better from up there, there is also a great deal of barbed wire and its there for a good reason. Also strongly discourage people from jaywalking and even standing in the middle of the road listening to the noises of the pylon and the nature etc and thinking “wow, thats cosmic” – easy to forget that traffic comes out of nowhere at speed!
Better to bring the shrooms back to where you can inspect them in good light, remove and dispose of any non target ones, share them out fairly and equally (so the greedy folk don’t end up freaking out and in the NNUH or James Paget being calmed down) and then go on your mission. Plus as these are class A though its unlikely you would meet a bobby way out on the sticks (unless other youths have been caning them and behaving like oafs in the surrounding village), worth having a cover story ready (like you are listening for owls or exploring for other creatures for your college project or even out of curiosity). In many cases even if the bobby thinks you are collecting shrooms, if you aren’t being anti social they might not be up for obtaining multiple extra units to nick all of you and take you back to the arse end of nowhere where them new police centres are based and then have to do fuckloads of paperwork for substances what would only get you a caution anyway..
The fields I and my cronies go to is a sheep pasture (if that’s the correct terminology) and like I say, its usually quite densely funguseded lol
Will have to go on a night fishing exposition soon and see how its coming along.

yep thats correct for sheep, cattle, horses, swine and all other grazing livestock. Not sure if the pylon trick works round your way as SE England is geographically denser, there aren’t as many Grid pylons until you go way further out into the sticks.
There are a fair few SSE Power distribution ones at 33 000 or 66 000 V which might not be enough for shrooms, as it may be the leakage current of the 132 000V or above causing this phenomenon.
These days I have a professional interest in power quality as I look after critical communications systems in healthcare environments and its “power cut season” (the change in weather causes fluctuating demand and unearths weak points at the Grid) – ironically this is why I can’t spare 12 hours for a trip these days as if I get a “off supply” warning even if I don’t have to attend the sites I have to at least coherently explain to staff (who are often in a state of alarm and might not even speak English as a first language) how to get things back on line and we’ve already had one big power cut at a rural site this month…
investigating the effect of the grid leakage current on the mycelium this would actually be a really interesting final year or maybe postgrad project for anyone brainy enough to be going up to Uni to study a science based degree but you’d probably need a fuckload of Home Office licenses to do it – though if it also encouraged growth of champignons and other beneficial fungi that might be a good thing…
Anyone around north Hampshire wanna go mushroom picking tomorrow then? 😀
fine if no-one wants to invite me picking im gon come online with a load of pics that blatantly aren’t shrooms to ask a load of noob questions !

actually i guess you’re not that far!… u know which to pick??
TBH you are not a million miles away from Gaz either. in any case it is going to involve exploration of random cowfields outside Reading, just that it would be from different points of the compass..
im not sure if there is an invite coming from that part of the compass… i actually know sungazer now so i’ll feel at ease to burden him with my noob presence…. “… is this one one?” “no” … “is this one one?” “no!” … “is this one one ??” “NO!!” … lolz i cant wait, gotta love being a n00b ! :p
I can guarantee that all of you are going to be crawling around a field just outside Reading, even if its two separate groups approaching from different ends of the region. Look on the map at where you are, and where the nearest bits of green fields would be…
