At last weekends party, a friend said he had got a mac and some sort of music software – but it was protected by a USB key that he didn’t have…

He said he didn’t know much about computers, I was wary to encourage him to look for stuff on torrent/warez sites – apart from the legal/ethical side of this I didn’t want him to accidentally get loads of viruses/worms…

Is there any decent open source or low-cost music software for Macs, or a way of getting good stuff at a fair price? I rarely use macs so I’m not sure what is available TBH..

I dunno about Macs or pro music software for that matter, it all seems horribly complicated and l’d have to spend lots of money doing music courses to get to grips with it.

Sound trackers are ace freeware programs though, are you familiar with them?

I used to use them on my Commodore Amiga, and there are loads of PC tracker programs as freeware now. My fave is Madtracker, it’s a free download, but you have to pay 40 Euro for a “pro” upgrade that allows you to export commercial-quality WAVs.

You get the free ModPlug Tracker too, and you can read MadTracker files on that, and it allows you to render the MIDI file as WAV, free of charge! But the sounds need tweaking, you know, EQ-ing. And l’m sure the quality is slightly less than when you hear it on the original MadTracker screen.

MadTracker has some nice FX too, strong and clear delays , phasers, flangers etc.

Indeed, used to use trackers loads a few years back but sadly haven’t had as much time for music/creative stuff as I once did..

thats what I find strange, there doesn’t seem to be as much open source/freeware type stuff like this for Macs, although I suspect its because I’m not looking in the right places for it..

Nah i’ve just researched and found that MadTracker isn’t available for Mac.

I’ve also found this post on some kind of forum, and there’s one person who’s saying he’s not even found any mod trackers for Mac, and everyone else is saying “just get Reason/Ableton” etc etc etc.

I’d go ask on [SIZE=-1]http://www.kvraudio.com forum, they know everything.

But if I was on a budget and had a Mac then I’d get GarageBand it’s actually quite good. http://www.apple.com/uk/ilife/garageband/

GarageBand came as standard on my mac with OSX, so your mate might already have it. Otherwise, I don’t know if it is copyable as I’m a computer-retard. ;-(

Open source to the rescue (well probably anyway….:wink:)

Go to this link at Sourceforge, and put in a filter from the filter link at the top to:

REQUIRE — OPERATING SYSTEM — OS X

You can definetly get Audacity for the mac, and AFAIK, the AILSA libs have been done for OS X, so you should be able to get loads more (I got 300 or so hits for projects…raaa)

And it’s all free…

Another way to get decent soft at a decent price would be to buy a sound card (not sure what interfaces a mac has, but it will have USB and likely Firewire)….

If you can manage just over £50-£100, companies are selling off stock of the old Emu external USB 2 sound cards (Turnkey have an 0202 for £49, and an 0404 for £109inc VAT) – which comes with Ableton lite 4, Melodyne, Amplitube, and the Proteus CD….

And Ableton is probably the best audio software out there (I still use it for loop manipulation, even though I make my music with hardware synth/samplers)…

I duno these mac virgins ..basically sounds like he has Logic which there is a copy you can use without the dongle floating around but it’s logic express combined with logic and has loads of content missing. Take it from me you can not get a full copy of Logic to work without the key otherwise i would have it as my bro bought Logic.

As for P2P sites here are a couple that are really good oh an no need to worry about viruses if you are using OSX you dont get them !

These are just a few GL. Your friend can see plenty more on the site I have mentioned above in green.

Of course your friend will have to quote his model of the Mac before he starts downloading because some softwares will work only for certain models if you get what I mean. I started my first computer career of course on a Mac but that was like 10 years before. Now I occassionaly use a Mac just PC’s.

Actually can’t he use any dongle as long as it’s for the software? I swear someone was selling one on Dubstepforum…. may of been on USH.net

I know some of the software is incorporated in the dongle but not sure if they are coded to each copy
