I bought an xbox the other day off a bloke over the road for £80, the thing is as fresh and clean as it gets. I’ve been playing pro evo 11 on it like a hero and now I want to update the game data.
BUT. I don’t know how to get it online, its one of the new 4GB elite jobbies and it has wireless connection but it doesn’t want to do anything….
My brother has tried putting his WiFi adapter in it and it still doesn’t work. Am I doing something wrong? Or am I really stupid and have missed something…..
Any help would be epicly helpful!!
I take it you have gone into settings and set up the wifi?
I am no expert on these things (biotech might have one) but you would have to put in the encrpytion code for your home router (this is usually on the side of the device with a barcode). I don’t think any ISP issues routers without encryption nowadays (or your neighbours and any randoms could rinse your wifi). there must be a setting for this on the console in some menu..
It’s gonna be much better if you can hardwire it though!
true 90% of kit at home is hardwired other than laptops and at work about 98% of it as whatever frequencies the local (military) aerodromes transmit on cut straight across WIFI and they’ve got primary allocation to the frequencies (there is a war on, chaps).
whenever I suggest it to “normal” folk they are concerned over long wires being ugly/trip hazard, especially as the cable lot and Openreach put the NTEs in the downstairs area so those in family houses have the router often in a inconvenient place. Also most people tend not to have a stock of long CAT6 patch cables easily to hand at 23:00 (I do, but I work in ICT and have bizzare things like a entire small digital telephone exchange set up in the stairwell…. )
Yeah I’m just gonna stick the LAN cable in tomorrow, can’t be bothered to run it up and round the house at this time, I wanna just sit in bed, drink my scotch and watch ip man 2 hahaha
Putting a lan cable won’t make a difference if you haven’t sone into the settings and selected either wired or wireless connection. Also you will need an xbox live silver membership. Other wise you will not be able to sign into xbl. Gimmie a shout when you are up and I can tell you everything you n eed to do mate
I’m really no help at all with these things, but have you considered threatening it with violence?
Get a PS3.
Ha! Sorry, I used to have an Xbox too, one of the older ones which you had to buy a separate wifi transceiver for.
I’ve been caught out a couple of times by the option to select which encryption you’re entering. Either WEP or WPA. Your broadband router will only accept one so make sure you know which it is or no amount of angry pad-throwing will get you logged in.
On another, more retarded PS3 owner, bent. I had no idea my console had wifi built in so I spent ages trying to work out how to reconfigure a router to talk to my home hub which was on the wrong side of a doorway. After lots of forum reading I discovered the simpler path.
Eejut.
this info is usually on a sticker on the side of the router or in a pack containing a CD that NTL or VM would have normally either given whoever pays the bill, although I’ve heard that in family homes often parents instruct the cable guy to give it to one of the kids who “knows something about computers” – they tend to also end up with the router in their bedroom if the parents don’t want it on top of the telly and its not a combined set top box.
That said I’ve no idea what they hand out these days, when I first got NTL broadband they were a huge great box that looked straight out of the 80s and my mum would have not wanted downstairs anyway…
