    Wikipedia on Imperialism:

Imperialism is a policy of exerting effective and continuing control or authority over foreign entities as a means of acquisition and/or maintenance of empires. This is either through direct territorial conquest or settlement, or through indirect methods of influencing or controlling the politics and/or economy. The term is used to describe the policy of a nation’s dominance over distant lands, regardless of whether the subjugated nation considers itself part of the empire.

The “Age of Imperialism” usually refers to the Old Imperialism period starting from 1860, when major European states started colonising the other continents. The term ‘Imperialism’ was initially coined in the mid to late 1500s[2] to reflect the policies of countries such as Britain and France’s expansion into Africa, and the Americas.

Well now, did the the British Empire give up control of colonies to preserve its democratic system? Only an American would say that…:hopeless:

We were screwed by the Americans, after WW2. look at the strength of Germany and Japan now, and ask yourself why that’s not us.

Its because it was a secret war aim, of the USA, to replace the failing British Empire in the post war-world. Britain bankrupted itself fighting Hitler, and the US had us over a barrel, we only finished paying the US for ww2, on December 31st 2006!

JM Keynes (the famous economist) badly misjudged the loan negotiations, and the US added loads of massively costly strings regarding trade agreements, according to a fascinating documentry shown on the Beeb in Jan.

This bloke is right tho, the US empire looks pretty shaky right now…

Well to be fair we would probably own USA now if wasnt for us fighting spain whilst waging war with america.
