Organisers of this summer’s music festivals have been asked by the government to warn revellers about “legal highs”. Minister for Crime Prevention, James Brokenshire, wrote to festival organisers asking them to warn people how such substances could be dangerous.
He said drug laws would be changed and a temporary ban may be introduced while “full scientific advice” was sought.
Letters were also sent to councils and police forces in festival areas.Mr Brokenshire said: “During the festival season we know that people may be tempted to try potentially dangerous new drugs, particularly when they are advertised as ‘legal’ or ‘herbal’. “That is why we are asking festival organisers and police to work with us to send out the message that these substances may not be safe and could contain illegal drugs.
“We are going to change our drug laws so we can respond quickly to emerging substances by introducing a temporary ban while we seek full scientific advice.”
Some drugs previously sold as “legal highs” have now been banned, including mephedrone, now a Class B drug. The Home Office said that the drug naphyrone is branded as NRG1 and sold as “plant food” or “bath salts”, but may contain one or more illegal drugs. The government said it will not permanently ban a substance without receiving full advice from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs. In the letter sent to festival organisers, Mr Brokenshire said: “As part of your preparations for this year’s event I ask you to review the measures you have put in place to ensure that your festival is as safe an environment as possible, to help protect the public, especially young people from the potential harms and risks of all drugs.” The government’s advice has been welcomed by Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, which stages the Latitude, Big Chill and Reading and Leeds Festivals. He said: “I can confirm that we do not allow legal high traders to trade at any Festival Republic festival and fully support the minister’s view.”
BBC News – Festival organisers asked to warn against ‘legal highs’
looks like whoever was putting MDPV in the NRG-whatever has pissed on everyones chips even more, now the govt have more reason to clamp down.
they aren’t as daft as they think and have been “following the money” of legal high sales and suspect that some smaller music-based festivals are at least partly funded by them just as pill sales funded the rave scene in the 1990s, plus both MDMA (when it was more readily available) and mephedrone was responsible for a lot of festival goers being taken off to hospital from Glade (I knew this was happening via NHS sources long before the media did but kept quiet about it not wanting to jepoardise the events license)
Remember that Cameroon and his missus were both ravers in their youth..
probably for the best really it should be all or nothing with drugs, no point only having the unsafe research chems legal when all the safe tried and tested drugs are illegal
on the other hands people are just gonna start sniffing glue and drinking floor cleaner to get high if they cant get hold of anything good and illegal

I’m old enough to remember the days of solvent abuse and TBH I doubt this will happen as cannabis and even alcohol tend to provide just as good a buzz..
when solvent abuse was rife alcohol was more expensive and the practice of growing cannabis in the UK unheard of..
My favourite bit:
“The government said it will not permanently ban a substance without receiving full advice from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs.”
Ahem, what was it the ACMD said about mephedrone?
all the more rebellious ACMD staff have been fired/pushed out..
Yeah I know. Who wants people who might not agree with you on an advisory council?
I think its stupid that the goverment are banning legal highs,i hope this doesnt effect NRG 2 and 3 and NRG4,i dunno if u can classify them as legal highs,im preyin this doesnt happen to us because it will ruin alot of businesses that sell legal highs,we shud do a protest sayin that we want them to listen to our views and to not ban the highs,

all the while drugs are illegal, I think its a bit of a joke to have RCs imported and sold to the masses. Its not an underground scene anymore, people (yourself and PV included) have promoted it all so much its hardly a surprise. Methadrone got too popular for its own good for a number of reasons, but pushing all this NRG crap in a desperate bid to keep making profits, knowing how unhappy the government are with the situatuon. Well its not rocket science is it.
What did people expect? the government to just allow people to order the latest drugs off the net? amazed it hasnt happened sooner. It would be like posting the directions for free party’s on youtube and then not expecting the government to react when they get thousands of people turning up.
I know its far from just those factors, but I think my points are valid

PS. Good, I have met Camden street dealers with higher morals. At least they tell you what the drug actually is.
Fuck the plant food, not for human consumption market!!
actual head shops i don’t mind being around but all this dirty Chinese crap will just make MDMA rarer.

The thing is though they are selling legal highs but pretending they are not with the plant food/research chemical bullshit, i don’t really care about their businesses as a lot of them clearly don’t even care about the peoples health they are selling them to.

at least with mephedrone the package was what it said – you could look it up on the internet and even if you’re not a scientist get some info. the biggest problem with mephedrone was that younger people in particular got greedy with it very quickly and experienced health problems. the NHS has then had to use its resources making these people better over and above all the other problems drugs cause.
both the feds and independent scientists have tested the NRG-type substances and found that they blatantly even contain illegal drugs in them, and the people selling them are refusing to give exact info of their contents.
and the new law isn’t against human rights as european countries with slightly better human rights than the UK still have it, so protests will make no difference.
it would be better to decriminalise the proper old style party drugs instead but even with those people binged on them and got ill..
Well ill b ordering an oz of nrg-1 soon better to keep some safe if it may get banned hehe
