squat in city centre pub.now open. get involved. pm me for the guys numbers.
Well seven weeks in and the owners turn up! bollocks. They wernt interested in doing a deal they just want us out so the building can sit empty for another two years or untill it falls down. Oh well its in the hands of the courts now so chances are we’ll be out in a few weeks. Pity really lovely building, first place we squatted that actually feels like home, the dogs love it, big garden and right next to the park. well all thats left is the party i guess, and i’m tempted to be a thieving cunt and have all the copper and brass away.
sounds like good place…hopefully the nobbers take their time(and alot) in court so you have a chance to enjoy it in the meantime…
From experience of squatted pubs in nearby Reading the breweries would much rather let a pub rot than let squatters take over although we used to get them for months on end.
But Court in England is much quicker these days. I think In Scotland squatting buildings is banned and you will just get arrested!
I’m a member of CAMRA and have learned that the way that legit pub landlords get treated is fucking atrocious, there is no way they are going to tolerate people going outside the free market.. actually I remember a bunch what squatted their former local :laugh_at:
Funnily enough the old landlord of the pub popped round for a chat the first week we were here. Really nice bloke, didn’t have a lot of love for the pubchain that owns the place. Its owned by a couple of fucking yanks who never even set foot in the place and handled by some big asset managment company from the city. They tried some pretty lame scare tactics on us but soon realised they maybe a little out of their depth. I’m thinking of presenting them with an invoice for all the work we’ve done to the building, at least for materials as its in a far far beter condition than when we moved in. We’re not that bothered about court, we know the system fairly well and there are ways of stringing out the inevitable eviction, but with so many pubs closed/closing in this town we’ll probably just move on.

The London-based companies are fairly similar in their actions although its unusual for them to bother evicting so quickly!
In Reading it was normally the local companies what did this, those from London would leave places for months on end..
the ones here are well guarded up and even the neighbours will call nines if they see someone even trying to break in, but they are more concerned over people robbing out all the metal etc. I’ve tried to encourage some of the more clued up younger people here to set up a squat/infoshop but its not worth it as they know their stupider mates will just trash the place, and then they will get done for burglary/criminal damage by the Police.
Also most young people today have much better relations with their parents (they are more tolerant about drugs and alternative lifestyles) so rarely end up homeless. Unfortunately, the cops and Councils are aware of this too!
We had a really good bike workshop in the cellar of a disused pub (its perfect for this purpose)!
I’d upload pictures of the Reading squats but unlike todays Facebook generation I respect peoples privacy and I’ve lost touch with folk to ask permission, so there wouldn’t be much really to see unless people enjoy looking at random piles of tat..
I might post some pics for posterity as it were. Been using it as a workshop since we got here. been pulling loads of stuff out of the bins and skips in town and been giving it away or flogging it back to people at the boot sale. Bit gutted though just been given a table saw and was gonna start getting some speakers together. might have to put it on the backburner for a while.
always worth having a friend with a more stable home and space if you get evicted, for stashing the more valuable tat, but if Hampshire is anything like Reading in the early Noughties there will be loads of space.
Sadly here in East Anglia the locals are way more hostile to squatters than in London or SE England, as squats have a bad rep for serious class A drugs and its a very divided and stubborn populace here.. Mind you one squat of speed freaks was bust and their gear came back at 5%, I remember telling my mates “these muppets should have been done for fraud for selling such shite!”

Looks like a cool building mate. I love old school pubs!
Yeah me to. shame this one will probably end up as luxury shoeboxes that no one will be able to afford. Which is what seems to be happening to all the other ones in the area.:you_crazy
nice man looks like a nice place to live!
Do you know how old the building actually is? Be a shame if a proper old school pub is turned into flats. 🙁
Its got to be at least a hundred years old. We squatted one just down the road a few years ago and it had part of the medieval city walls in the cellar. They evicted us, knocked it down and it has just been an empty plot since. fucking mental eh?
